How to start assemble a system From Kappa8's, I went to Genesis 350's by the same Arnie Nudell. The difference between those two is comparable the difference between the Kappas and a boom box. The Genesis V/501's are in between but I've seen good deals lately on the used market.
Obsessed with room acoustics You're still a long way from rock bottom. Nothing to worry about yet. The first step is admitting you have a problem.
external power supplies I've wondered why there are no amps with external power supplies. Espescially class A, where the heat can get to the caps. There were the Rowland batteries back in the day and the Coda System 100 that seperated the input section. Joule has it's va...
Review: Bent Audio Tap Linestage I don't have a TAP but a DIY using TX102 mk3's. With a Talk Thunder 3.1B putting out 4.2V into XLR (<100 ohms) and dual Plinii SA100's with 38db gain (seemed almost double when bridged), the knob sits between quarter and half way. The speakers ...
Can you correct nulls with acoustic treatments. I don't trust readings below 100 Hz for reasons of speaker and instrument inaccuracy. However, the dips centered around 125 and 250 Hz are definately room related. I would suggest focusing on those and hope for ancillary benefits below. Playing th...
Why not use a power conditoner First thing I would suggest would be to confirm the polarity of the outlets. I have tried Snappers with balanced AC and they didn't like it, which suggests an unusual grounding issue. However, they were quiet with "normal" AC.Second, disconnect th...
Review: Bent Audio Tap Linestage What a nasty piece of business that was by S&B. I know how much time John invested in the development of the TAP but I also know that John won't give up and it was not for naught. My sympathy to John and the customers that will have to wait.
Power Conditioners Suited to Digital Front End How about an iso transformer. There's a bunch of Hulda/GE 1200 watt units with medical grade outlets on EBay for $150 and plenty of Tripp-Lites. 500 watts for the front end would be plenty.
more reliable amp: tube or solid state class A I've yet to hear any evidence that class A is any less reliable. I've only heard opinion and presumption. I've had many A/B and A amps over the years and the only one that burnt out any transistors (FETs) was A/B. The Plinius amps I have now have ...
High end stores closing do you really care Never encountered that type of snobbery. In fact, ten to twenty years ago, most were willing to demonstrate systems that they knew were well beyond my means. Some had plenty of advice and opinions that I took with a grain of salt. However, without...
When is your system good enough-and why? When I can't afford anything better.
Spare change on a speaker cabinet Canadian loonies would seem to be the answer. It works even better if they're cryo'd.
Can you correct nulls with acoustic treatments. The worst room I ever heard had one 8' diagonal wall in the rear corner. It had two 300Hz nodes just in front and to the side of the listening position that were painful, even with music. I helped him get some materials for DIY tube and panel trap...
Can you correct nulls with acoustic treatments. Acoustic treatment can help but don't expect miracles. Good start, BTW.These other frequencies can be harmonics or "half-harmonics" of the main frequencies. What I mean by the latter would be, for example, 100 and 150Hz. Start in the corners behin...
Another room treatment convert Yup, those graphs are pretty much what I would expect. Even though that's only two corners of an entire room, you'll hear the difference easily. |
