$3000 Speaker/electronics budget
I disagree pretty strongly with some of the posts above.First of all, a quality DVD source SHOULD be part of your friend's budget, whether it is now or not.. He really needs to go see the difference a good DVD player makes by auditioning at least ...
Linn users need your advice on Amps.
Putty's advice is clearly better than mine, having actually heard something similar to the combination in question. As to your question, however, the Solo's would be far better than anything in the Chakra line, not only because they are 290 Watts ...
Best processor that is excellent for 2 Ch music
1/28/06I don't think anything in this price range will come close in 2 channel sound to a Linn AV 5103. These things retailed for over $8000 just three years ago when they were replaced by the Kristo (15k), but one can be had now for around $1500....
Linn users need your advice on Amps.
I think the Klimax Chakra should work just fine, though there is no doubt that the Solos would be ideal. The 802D has good sensitivity (90db I believe), and the Chakra is a very big 125 Watts (i.e., much more capable of driving a tough load than a...
Esoteric DV50S, Any Plans to Discontinue?
Excellent question. I have had this player home for an audition. It is very detailed, and although I am not sure the detail it presents is always musical, I thought the SACD playback was particularly good. I think these are a great buy at a price ...
Dedicated power, long power cords - waste of time?
If you already have one dedicated line that does not require long (and consequently potentially very expensive) power cords, I would be really cautious about saying you definitely will find an audible improvement adding the two extra lines under t...
Can anyone suggest a good 2-channel amp for $1500
Although Bryston doesn't make my favorite amps, they make good sounding ones without a doubt (at least the ones I have heard). And if you are buying used, Bryston's 20 year, transferable warranty is a tramendous plus. Of course the reason they can...
Best Preamp/amp combo?
Of course, as I am sure you understand, you will need to audition any gear that people recommend to see what works best for your tastes. That said, Linn gear mates very well with Sonus Faber. If going with Linn, the ideal (but pricey) combination ...
Which of your component purchases was "magical"?
Almost always the source for me. This staying up late thing happens anytime I make a major upgrade to my table, arm or cartridge. It also happened when I upgraded from a Genki to an Ikemi CD player. Although I have really enjoyed other component u...
Speakers in the range of $3 to $4.5k per pair?
"JM Lab Electras would be a good match if you like B&W sound."Except that they sound MUCH better. B&W's have a tweeter that seems like it is trying to rip my ears right off of my head whenever I turn them up enough to get adequate mid-rang...
Best Sounding Red Book CD Changer Under $400
Something in the Sony ES series would seem your best bet.
Help me shorten my list...
Get rid of the JM Labs Cobalts and add the Electra series, which are astronomically better. The Electra 926 and 936 can be had for less than $3000 on the used market. If you want detail, you won't find a better speaker to give it to you in this pr...
please help, I need a good cd player used is ok
An NAD C320 BEE used runs $200 or so. You can get a new one for $300. I think you will be hard pressed to find anything better for the money.
Was your first cartridge relatively expensive?
Erratum: most analog music comes from record GROOVES, comparatively little from groves.
$8,000 budget--Need help
Put your system in ANY other room in your house (presumably smaller!). Then your 8K (on the used market) will get you a very good system to enjoy, at least if you are sticking to digital. New, you can still do reasonably well if you insist on goin...
