recommended versions of Beethoven symphonies?
i wouldn't usually recommend this to someone new to beethoven, but as you appear to be venturing off into the HIP of beethoven (gardiner) i would suggest you give Harnoncourt's performances a listen. He doesn't restrict his instruments to period o...
Vinyl distortion - What's the problem?
try tuning out the distortion by adjusting the anti-skating force +/- the optimum setting designated by the cartridge mfg. the exact setting proscribed isn't always the best on any given arm/cartridge combo.
Bright room, help
place a rug between the speakers and your listening position to eliminate floor reflections of the uppermids and high frequencies. adjust toe in to avoid side wall reflections or add deadening materiel on the side wall reflection points, including...
Sibilance how do I get rid of it?
i assume you have already do so, but speaker positioning heighth wise and direction in which they are pointed can be critical. i solved a similar problem by crossing the axis of the speakers in front of the listening position - it eliminated sidew...
Mahler...OK I'm hooked
keep-em in numerical order (except for 4 - you can do that anytime). my recommendations for #3 on lp, Bernstein again with the NYP or Horenstein and the LSO (if you can ever find it). I also have and enjoy Tennstedt, (an excellent Mahler conductor...
Using a tube amp with a Solid State preamp
you won't have a problem with impedences using a ss pre amp. you want the pre-amp output impedence to be no greater than 1/10th of the imput impedence of the amp. most ss preamps have output impedences of l ohm or less (whereas tube preamps typica...
Use 4 or 8 ohm output on amp for 6 ohm speakers?
tireguy, in the greater sense none of this stuff makes a whole lot of sense since all we do is part with our cents and sense when we participate. (sorry, i couldn't resist):-D
Use 4 or 8 ohm output on amp for 6 ohm speakers?
tireguy's right in the sense that you need to know what the actual impedence curve is. if you have a dip into the 3 to 4ohm area the 4ohm tap is probably best. other than that, just use the tap that sounds better to you. it will differ from speake...
What is your most beautiful component?
the glow of uncaged tubes in my amps (in the dark).
Can you cancel an auction?
i saw it happen on audiogon just a few weeks ago after the item had been listed for a week or so. then item then appeared in the "for sale" section a few days later at the going price. i don't know how audiogon could force a sale. i think what hap...
What was your biggest priority?
records and cd's absorb about 3/4ths of the money i spend in this hobby. speakers & amps, preamp, cd player, turntable/arm/cartridge, in that order consume the rest. cost of components were about the same for each. very very little spent on tw...
vocal music for a newbie
excuse 2d post, my brain was in so-mo above. the choral piece that stands highest in my collection and regard is Faure's Requiem as performed by Herreweghe w/a chamber orchestra recorded by Harmonia mundi #9011771. This is without any doubt one of...
vocal music for a newbie
R strauss' orchestral songs are one of my favorites. you basically have a soloist and an orchestra. the music is very assessible.EMI has a "great recordings of the century" series which includes a classic performance by elisabeth schwarzkopf &...
FM Antenna placement, wiring
i put stacked directional antennas in my attic. works just fine. i could probably get by with an omni but my stations all came from one general direction and the directional antennas have better signal strength. my experience with the small amplif...
Advice on an upgrade
dennis, i have no doubt that the VTL intregrated is warmer than your NAD with these speakers - i would think the NAD's were never a proper choice for them. that doesn't mean in any absolute sense that they have a warmish tone - that effect has eve...
