Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
In the past I would have dogmatically agreed that platter mass was a key point for good analog playback. I still think its a key contributor. However the Well Tempered Reference has shown me that is not a bit t Truth. I bet its platter does not we...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
@lewm Total 14.8 kg (Chassis 5 kg, Platter 9.8 kg); Power Supply 0.5 kgSo 21.6 pounds.I even checked my math with a conversion program!
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
I have owned all three drive types, and am of the opinion that the DD tables such as the Denon DP 75 and 80 are an excellent value. I suspect the two part platter isolates the record and cartridge interface from the effects of motor vibration that...
Reasonable moving coil cartridge
For about $350 you can get an Audio Technica OC9 II cartridge, and its a mighty fine sounding LOMC for that kind of money. Boron cantilever and microridge stylus, its hard to believe you can get one for this kind of money. Heck retippers would cha...
Bare cartridge design, Sumiko Blackbird Low Output
I have owned a couple of the Blackbirds, but they were the HO version. Very nice sounding cartridge, reminded me  a lot of my ZYX, similar kind of voicing. As I remember the wires are pretty well protected by a channel guard. There are not flying ...
Casual Listening Attempt #2 Brinkmann Audio
So this afternoon I moved the table off the Graham Slee Accension and Elevator phono stage. Moved that combo over to a Well Tempered Reference with Ikeda 9 Kawami cartridge, which I know works very well together. I then installed the Brinkmann/Aud...
Casual Listening Attempt #2 Brinkmann Audio
Just roughed in the set up this afternoon. Installed the ZYX first but its a bit spirited on this table. Put the Ortofon A90 on it and its a very nice sound. Excellent combination of refinement, smoothness, and detail. This ia not a table/arm comb...
Casual Listening Attempt #2 Brinkmann Audio
I have the micrometer option. Its great for small vta changes.
Casual Listening Attempt #2 Brinkmann Audio
Was a share. I am curious to see how this works out as its design is a bit different than my SP10 MK II or DP75. Would be nice to find a source for alternate arm boards, especially those made from different materials. Have struck out finding any t...
In praise of the mighty SOTA Sapphire
They certainly are nice tables. I bought a Star Sapphire MK III as a proof of concept table. I hated the oak finish, but loved the table. I ended up buying a Cosmos Eclipse in bloodwood, and have a Nova Eclipse on order for my casual table. Belts ...
Linear Tracker ...I was wondering
Surprised there is no mention of Advanced Analog MG1. An affordable linear tracking option. Their site is under construction. But there is info there.adanalog.com
Guest suddenly takes it upon herself to move my speakers
My JBL 4365 weigh 195 pounds each. You gotta do some work to move them.
Best Tonearm for Thorens TD-124.
When I had my TD 124 I used an Eminent Technology II on it and that was a fine combo. I also had an Audiomods Classic II as another choice and that was a fine arm. I bet the SME M2-9 would be a great choice also.
Cartridge suggestions
I am not a huge moving magnet fan, but I did get to spend quite a bit of time with the LP Gear Vessel R3SM. It uses a ruby cantilever and Shibata stylus. A bit spendy for a MM cartridge but it sounds glorious! Nicely detailed, refined, even tonal ...
