Is there a Guide Available to Grading LP's.
Yes. The standard is from Goldmine magazine, which is for record collector's. Here is a link to one reprint of the grading system:http://www.12mb.com/connie/grade&care.htm
Mark Levinson 27 Clipping
I don't know what the specs of the Apogee's are, but I ran my ML 27 with Thiel 3.6's, which are 4 ohm speakers rated at 86db and never had a problem. It played them loud and clean.
CDR's in a DVP9000es
Read the manual. It tells you which type of discs it will play and CDR's are not among them. The 9000ES will not play CDR's. That said, I did stick one in that it did play, for some odd reason. An anomaly, I guess.
No good new music?
I probably bought about 100 CD's this past year. I'd second Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," Steve Earle's "Jerusalem," and Leonard Cohen's "Ten New Songs."To those, I'd add:Peter Bruntnell "Ends of the Earth" Jay Bennett & Edward Burch "Palace...
Used Pre-amp with HT pass-thru
I chose a VTL 2.5, which can be had for around $750 here.(sometimes less). It has HT pass through, which I run my pre/processor through. Works well and is an excellent pre-amp at this price.
Speaker placement tool??
You don't say!
After Market Power Cables - Gold or Snake Oil?
I don't understand much about electricity or why "better" power cords make a difference. I only know what I hear -- and I hear a BIG difference. Skeptical, like you, I picked an inexpensive used one at first and I was sold on power cords. I've bou...
Is it worth it?
Consider the Sonus Faber Concertinos. A lot of bang for the buck.

aurios isolation and espresso
I plug all my kitchen appliances into a Hydra. Coffee is smooth and acid free, toast is always golden, and fresh squeezed grapefruit juice has just the right amount of tang without harshness.
Speakers for very near-field listening?
No speaker should sound as good as the Paradigm Atoms at their price. Ridiculous value for the money.
To biwire or not to biwire...?
I am currently bi-wiring after single wiring with brass plates and with jumpers. Jumpers are definitely better than the brass plates, not for the distance, but for the quality of the connection. Think about it -- after buying quality speaker cable...
Opinions on VTL preamps
Early on, VTL did develop a reputation for unreliability. Though that reputation may have been deserved years ago, the quality of VTL equipment has improved and that ought not to be an issue anymore. (I can only speculate that the reliability issu...
Ringmat vs. Linn felt mat
Interesting observation, Rcreations. I have the opposite experience -- the extreme donut mat sticks, the felt doesn't. Perhaps this is why my listening experience is opposite to yours?I wonder if it has to do with the relative humidity? I'm in Sou...
Sony 9000es DVD/CD/SACD Player as Transport?
I'm using the Sony 9000ES with Perpetual Tech P3A/P1A/Monolithic Power Supply, all with Modwright mods, and find it to be significantly better than the 9000ES alone. The 9000ES is a very good one-box player, on its own, and has the advantage of DVD...
