dynamic range -the good and bad?
Remember- a lot of different factors go into a classical recording. First, each conductor is going to have a different vision as to how the piece should sound. I have heard Beethoven's 9th some 15 times live. Sometimes there simply is a difference...
Will a new Preamp sovle my Problem?
You could try a little experiment. I am assuming that your listening position is somewhere greater than 6 feet from the speakers. Set your volume control to where it definitely sounds bright. Now move to within 3 feet of your speakers. It will be ...
Recommend SS Amp for Monitor Audio GS60?
I listened to the GS60's extensively a few months ago. Nice speaker - very neutral, well balanced. The dealers that had the GS60's all were driving them with anthem amps. Sounded fine - I wasn't impressed - but in a sense that is what a neutral sp...
cables are they worth it?
In short, no - an $800 interconnect is ridiculous. Likewise for a $50 power cord. I am sure someone would sell an $800 doorstop also - because it will "just hold the door open better". THere is one huge advantage to expensive cable and power cords...
"Budget" cable advice, please
Blue Jean cable sells Belden cable at any length you specify as well as interconnects. You can also buy Belden from a electrical supply house like Allied Electronics but you will likely have to buy it in either 500 or 1000 ft rolls. However, the o...
whistling in the ears
If you actually do have tinnitus it is a chronic condition, usually the result of acoustic trauma - time around artillery or on a flight line without hearing protection. It is permanent damage and does not go away. It may get worse but it won't ge...
cd player with balanced outputs
Great responses from both Shadome and Bob_reynolds. I will consider both options - thanks for the Jensen link. Shadome - what DSP are you using?
Cable elevators - conventional wisdom wrong?
There is no electrical benefit to raising your speaker cable off of the carpet. What noise are you going to couple from a static charge, and how are you going to couple it? The static is not changing so you are not going to couple it via capacitan...
Source or speaker
Think about what the various parts of a system have to do. Your speakers are the link that moves, or tansduces, the information from an electrical information to sound mechanical information (driver movement) to sound information. This transductio...
System too harsh Help
Jaybo - it is refreshing to read a post in which someone offers a common sense practical solution free of snake oil. Such solutions work. Way to go. The factors in any audio system are always going to be (ranked in % of effect)1) speakers (2) room...
Stranded vs singal core conductors and skin effect
Skin effect is not an issue for audio freqs = I started out in electronics as a teenager building a Heathkit 101 ham radio, worked as an electronics tech in the US Navy, earned a BSEE after return to civilian life and spent two decades working in ...
Rethinking Listening Fatigue
To the originator of the thread - your comment that the time of the day determined, at least in part, the experienced listening fatigue, is evidence that the source of the fatigue may your own subjective state; necessarily not constant. Major chan...
Suggestions For Classical & Symphonic CDs
kyung-Wha Chung violinist, with Andre Previn and the London Symphony on Decca - Tchaikovsky and Sibelius violin concertos. Many feel (myself included) that the string section along with the entire orchestra of the Berlin Philharmonic in the 1960's...
Rethinking Listening Fatigue
any information source as to what labels (classical music) employ the least compression? I would suspect DG, Telarc, and from what I have heard, Channel Classics - but that is just on a subjective basis.
speakers for classical music
Thought I'd get back to everyone on progress. By the way - a lot of great comments, very enlightening and really opened up some options and considerations. Had not thought of actives but now that is a real option. As to recent demo's and what I ha...
