How loud can I 'safely' play my Dynaudio Focus 140
Keep in mind that there are limits to all speakers, even for undistorted signals. If you hook up kilowatt monoblocks to those speakers and crank it up you will cook the speakers irrespective of distortion.
the process is more challenging than the result
Mrtennis: Very observant post. There are certainly many aspects to this hobby and the end result is a nice system for music listening. I agree that most benefits of music listening can be garnered from listening to a radio. Furthermore, there is n...
Lie you told your wife to buy equipment?
I don't lie to my wife about audio equipment purchases because I have enough to do keeping track of the lies I tell her so I can see my girlfriend.
want to build a 2 channel system where do i start
Good advice from Veroman - don't lead with the chin. I would add, start with the speakers. Narrow your speaker selection to a few models. I would not limit myself at the outset here - consider floorstanders, monitors (maybe with a sub) - also give...
To bi-wire or not to bi-wire?
Shardone: I agree with you on the point of wide band amplifiers. A high frequency cut off at 200k will reduce the phase change and attenuation a decade down. This would allow for less attention to the characteristics of that 200 k filter. However,...
Simple System for a Super Senior?
One thing to consider also is the layout of the remote or the ability to replace the remote with a programmable unit. Seniors usually have less than ideal eyesight and arthritis. Large remotes with large buttons and simple controls may be more use...
Which of Mozart's No.39 & 41 CD should I get?
I have the Bohm, Mackeras, and Gardner and those are all very nice. Another very fine choice is Pinnock's on Archive - I have the box set but the individual symphonies may also be available. The interpretations from all of these conductors are very...
Tone controls- to use or not?
Johnnyb53 - Good advice. Practical, to the point, thought outside the techno box. It is refreshing to see common sense.
Should repaired equipment be stated in the ad??
That would be ideal, and I would personally feel ethically bound to do so. However, caveat emptor is applicable here. When you buy used you are getting the product for less than you could buying new. The risk of buying a repaired item or a defecti...
To bi-wire or not to bi-wire?
actually our "hearing instrument" does not have an incredible range and is not all that accurate. A 3 db spl sound change is barely perceptible to the average person. While the audio range is defined as 20 to 20k most people cannot hear frequencie...
fuses - the $39 ones or the 85 cent ones
If one is going to replace their power cord and buy gold fuses, it seems that this is all for naught without replacing the romex from the outlet to the panel. You have 1.5 inches of fuse and 50 feet of romex. As to the ripple theory, if we are tal...
EMI FIELDS
Imnewton: A good source of information for shielding and grounding is "Noise Reduction Techniques in Electronic Systems" by Henry Ott. I had his first edition on my desk for a decade and bought his second edition after that. It is not a new book (...
EMI FIELDS
What you did was stop the interference by shielding the source of the interference rather than shielding the part affected. This is the preferable solution in the case where you have identified the source. From a practical standpoint, if it works ...
Tone controls- to use or not?
Absolutely use the tone controls. The idea of purity of signal only applies if you have hearing in the normal range. If you don't, as most people don't at some point in their lives, then you are not hearing the music as it was intended anyway. Adj...
To bi-wire or not to bi-wire?
As to the idea of the amplifier seeing a different impedance from biwiring vs not biwiring, any way you draw the circuit, the amplifier sees the same impedance. Likewise, biwire or not, both drivers see the same signal from the amplifier. Shardone...
