changing overall tone
Nope - the biggest factors in descending order of effect are (1) speakers, (2) room acoustics, (3) amplifier. If you want more lively sound without spending significant money, adjust the acoustics. Sharp hard edges that reflect sound should make y...
poor source material
Ucsb21: You said "The major issue I have with some of my albums is that the mids and highs appear to be hidden behind the music. The crash of cymbals, the snap of the snare, vocals etc. sound muted or veiled. If I adjust the treble and turn the vo...
poor source material
Ucsb21, you stated in part "I also noticed that a lot of albums (that I used to think sounded ok) sounds terrible on my new system" and "I've tinkered with the tone controls and it is a quick fix but, a few albums are still unbearable." You will g...
Which of Mozart's No.39 & 41 CD should I get?
Learsfool: While you are at it, take a listen to Abbado and Giulianno Carmignola on Archive for Mozart's violin concertos and sinfonia concertanta. Just released in 08 and very nice - also got a nice writeup in Gramaphone, I believe it was.
Best way of connecting bare wire to bare wire
Markphd: I might add that those audiophile grade wire nuts with the six nines copper hand made by Swiss mountain gnomes would be a bargain at, say, $39 each. The risk of not purchasing a pair is that the 10's of thousands of dollars spent on the s...
fuses - the $39 ones or the 85 cent ones
Good pont Timrhu. I don't beleive that there are any insurmountable difficulties in setting up a DBT of cables, amplifiers, power cords or whatever; simply a lack of interest by entities that have the resources to fund accurate and probative DBT's...
AC power cords and martin Logans
Doubt it. If it would, why wouldn't Martin Logan include the better cord? Seems like they would have the biggest interest of anyone in their speakers sounding the best possible, even a bigger interest than the individual consumer. Martin Logan's a...
RCA cables from preamp to amplifier
The balanced cable suggestion by Jb8312 is a good solution, if you have noise problems. I will add that if you don't have balanced input and/or output connectors on the units, take a look at using an isolation transformer(s) along with the balance...
What sounds best integrated or separates?
Mapman: Thanks for the info on the Rowland integrated - took a look at it on their web site. I was unaware that anyone made an integrated with that rated power. I have not had an interest for personal use of class D amps but have been of the opini...
Best way of connecting bare wire to bare wire
In general I have found Neutrik connectors to be of good quality. As to Antipodes mention of her interest in selling products- it is appreciated that you made this known. Too often there are posts from persons who argue in favor of certain product...
What sounds best integrated or separates?
At the outset, I own separates and prefer that setup. However, my opinion is that given the same power capabilities and distortion specs, a good integrated will sound as good as separates - for example I doubt that anyone could tell the difference...
Best way of connecting bare wire to bare wire
Anyway you want will work fine - I tend to agree with Eldartford. Wire nuts are simple, secure, and inexpensive and there isn't any downside. Get the yellow wire nuts and say they are then refer to them as the Gold wirenuts - better yet, add a dro...
Beethoven Ninth Symphony
I agree that Furtwangler's performances cannot be beat. The recordings from during the war on Music and Arts and the Tahra recordings are not the best. The EMI from 53 isn't too bad. As to other recordings, Gunter Wand's sounds decent as does Harn...
the process is more challenging than the result
The real danger is reaching the goal of a perfect system. Then there is nothing to do - existential angst - either accept Camus' absurdity of life and wait for death, or, find a new challenge. But no need to go seeking, grasshopper - countless cha...
Tone controls- to use or not?
Cdc - correct. The thing I find disturbing about the notion that someone with high frequency hearing loss should not use tone controls to boost the high frequencies is that it is insulting to people with a hearing handicap.
