Tannoy eyris 3 or focal cobalt 816s.. whats good ?
I used to own Eyris DC 3 and really liked them a lot. Perhaps much better than the plain Eyris 3, which didn’t get good marks from kdude66? But typically, you go Tannoy for their Dual-Concentric driver. Also a huge Tannoy fan here, and a lot of us ...
Worth the move: Polk Lsi9 to Tyler Acoustics Halo 4?
I’ve owned the LSi 9 a long time ago, then owned Tyler Talyo Ref monitors and Linbrook Signature monitors. The LSi 9 were decent (enjoyable, even), but I could tell even at the time that they were great for HT speakers and not quite to true "audiop...
Koetsu surprise
@terry9 Nothing particularly exciting to report on the stone body differences -- I find them all to be very close to each other; all excellent. I got the Coralstone brand new last year, and right out of the box it blew me away. Got my busted Onyx ...
Koetsu surprise
That’s awesome! She did amazing choosing a Koetsu Platinum. I love my Platinums (Rosewood, Onyx, Jade, Coralstone); stuck with Koetsu ever since I discovered I had a hard time warming up to the upper range Ortofons (Windfeld, etc).I’ve got a Fidel...
Tube Phono with Tube Integrated Amp?
First off, it’s bs to say generally that a tube phono goes better into a SS integrated. Second, the Chinook is actually a hybrid, with SS step up into a tube MM stage. That part has never really been advertised about the Chinook.
balanced audio vk P12 phono
@tablejockey Why bother posting on hi-fi audio forums if you take offense to the prices. It's expensive. Get over it, then go make friends on the cheapskate audio forums.
Experiences buying used cartridges
Buying a used phono cartridge for me would be like buying a used Tooth Brush!Except that versus a good toothbrush: a good cartridge is 100s of times more expensive, 100s of times more durable (if properly used), can often be completely rebuilt to ...
Experiences buying used cartridges
Agree with teo_audio. Think things through, do it often, and you can explore a wonderful range of high-end cartridges that you wouldn’t have otherwise been able to afford. My two biggest used cartridge purchases were a Koetsu Onyx Platinum and Jade...
Koetsu cartridges - what arms work?
I’ve used various Koetsu cartridges (Coralstone Plat, Jade Plat, Onyx Plat, Onyx Sig, RSP) between a Fidelity Research FR64fx and Graham Phantom Supreme 10". Both arms pair great.
If NOS pre or power tubes became unavailable altogether, what new tubes would you buy?
@bradf They’re chinese. If in doubt, they’re always chinese.I use and love vintage tubes everywhere, except my monoblocks’ KT120. So it would be quite a blow to give those up, but I’d have to go with the Rooski tubes (just trying various flavors u...
Interconnects
Cheetahs or heavily discounted Colorados are both good choices. The Colorado is warmer and more laid back, but has more 3D imaging. Cheetahs are more neutral. For 500 bucks used you may also be able to get a Niagara, which I like better than eithe...
Does anyone have Audioquest red wild or wel speaker cables?
I auditioned a single-biwire 8’ Redwood in my system a couple years ago. Nice cable, but I tuned them down to stick with my biwire of Mont Blanc (prior series; like half an Oak) on bottom and KE-4 up top -- which has slightly less metal overall, b...
Class D Technology
I don’t buy the "gas guzzler" A/B vs. "green" class D arguments for the latter. Kilowatt hours are cheap and relatively clean until you pile up a WHOLE lot of ’em. With typical audiophile usage patterns, and the fact that we’re a VERY small segmen...
Put a lid on it (or not?)
I've been doing this with my Rogue Ares phono preamp. The lid+sides is one piece of sheet metal of relatively low gauge; any disturbance and it rings like a bell -- not a good thing for a tube phono stage. Plus the weird tube cage thingy is ugly. ...
Your single favorite component
Koetsu stone body cartridge. I've had 4 now, and the best one is definitely my new Coralstone. But all of them do much of the same thing -- i.e. everything I want from a cartridge. It's the only component that sounds really good even on its bad day...
