Warm and Detailed S.S. Amp?
i am most concerned about upper midrange lower treble. any extra energy in this region, 1000 to 3000 hz can be most distressing to the ear. regardless of what happens say in the region 100 to 300 hz, the upper frequencies are critical to make a li...
Warm and Detailed S.S. Amp?
if warmth implies an attenuation in the lower treble, a component cannot be warm and detailed.so, it boils down to how a word is defined. for me warmth implies subtraction in the treble and also, slightly in the upper mids. too mjuch detail in the...
Warm and Detailed S.S. Amp?
hi sam, the combination of solid state and good is an oxymoron (just kidding). solid state is a miserable state (just kidding, again).i have heard many solid state amps, but have liked none. all of them sound like transistors. they have no color.p...
Consumer Electronic Show ?
by the way, i bet it costs more to attend the rmaf than the ces . why ?? food and lodging and perhaps airfare.also,if the rmaf is anything like the stereophile shows in ny and california, ces may allow the opportunity to hyear your own music, with...
Warm and Detailed S.S. Amp?
i have never heard a solid state that sounds warm.i will define warm as a coloration entailing extra energy in the upper bass and/or lower midrange, with a corresponding attenuation in the lower treble.such a presentation would not be perceived as...
Who Do You Credit For Getting You Into This Hobby?
as i understand, audiophiles don't like the sound of instruments, they would rather suffer through bad recordings as proof that their systems are accurate.
Planar to dynamic, dynamic to planar, or ...
cone or horn designs have a coloration i don't like. there have been a few exceptions, such as an early gradient, aerial 10t, esp bhodran and maybe a proac response 3. however, i suspect that after a period of time, i would tire of those cone desi...
Who Do You Credit For Getting You Into This Hobby?
once i was exposed to live music, i wanted to try to recreate the sound of acoustic instruments, to the best of my ability.i concluded that speakers which do not use horns or cones come closer than the aforementioned drivers.
Audiophile Boom Box?
there are a number of "personal" stereo which use the flat panel technology for the treble and part of the mids and a woofer for the lower mids and bass. brookstone has one for about $300 . i own it aand it's good enough for general listening.what...
Consumer Electronic Show ?
you will have more fun going to the show than you will listening to your own stereo systems. the chance to meet and talk to designers and owners of "boutique" audio companies is one reason to attend this show. you may get lucky and hear something ...
Has anyone answered the real question?
you don't need a stereo system to have music playing through your head. the music on your brain depends more upon you than your stereo system. imagination is better than reality. remember paul simon's song "kodachrome" ?
newest vs older dac
older dacs rule, especially some of the older tube dacs.the problem is partly 24/192. too much reolution is not the solution.older dacs may seem by comparison to sound "less detailed", but they are easier to tolerate over longer periods of time.
Who else prefers 5751s and why?
i have a ge 5751 black plate, which i use in an audionote cd player. it's my favorite tube, for reasons opposite to those stated above, namely it significantly rolls off the treble, adds a touch of veiling and takes the edge off most poorly record...
Upgrading tubes in DAC
if you want a "softer" sound you might be better off with a ge 5751 black plate from the 60's, or before that.if your dac can accept any 12 volt tube, i have found the 5814 tube to be kind to the ear. i have an alpha dac and i use ge 5814 black pl...
Should a good system sound bad with bad recording?
nobody has defined what a good system is.if one assumes it means as accurate as one can afford, then such a system is at the mercy of the recording.a bad recording can sound brutal and a great recording can be sublime. thus, one may suffer the ext...
