Where does "MidFi" differ from "HiFi" or "LOFI"?
@cd318 indeed. This Fletcher-Munson curve has been discussed on here several times. Hence the need (if we are honest) for either an EQ or what used to be termed a "Loudness Button" that would compensate for how the human ear perceives the frequenc...
Vinyl record cleaning
Use Cascade Dishwasher Detergent. It has better surfactants than Tide and won't leave a residue behind. Note that this method works best if you live in an area with soft water instead of hard water.  Do NOT use a Brillo Pad.
Where does "MidFi" differ from "HiFi" or "LOFI"?
"The ear hears from a range of 20-20,000HZ, but mid-range is certainly not at the 10,000HZ level.".  You need to think in terms of octaves, not the full frequency range. 20Hz to 40Hz is an octave, 40Hz to 80Hz is an octave, 80Hz to 160Hz is an oc...
Reliable Mid-Priced 7.2 Channel Receiver
I have an OLD Denon 5.1 AVR in the den and it does everything I could hope. Yeah, my old TV is only 4K, not one of the newer 8K models.  I can only comment that the Denon just works and this after more than a few firmware updates where I held my ...
What am I missing?
I love my CDs and I love streaming. CD quality at 16-bits/44.1KHz was not arrived at lightly. In the late 1970s much research was done on how "good" digital needed to be in order to sound, well, "good". At the same time the technology of the day h...
HoloAudio STREAMER is out now
The blurb on their website says this, "This audio device is using a Pi Compute Module 4  it only uses the Pi4 as core system. It differs from a standard Raspberry Pi because it does not have all peripheral components on board, but has been develop...
Only two tracks to test your system, forever!
@mjmcubfn Tidal’s search is just as bad. Leave out anything and it won’t find it. They really do need to incorporate a level of "intelligent closeness" and offer suggestions better. And oftentimes I do better by searching for the song title rather...
Only two tracks to test your system, forever!
All good suggestions. I’m trying to think of only TWO songs that can provide all of the following: 1. Dynamics. 2. Soundstage and imaging. 3. Frequency response. 4. Bass textures. 5. The critical midrange - female and male vocalists and most inst...
Why are there so many wooden box speakers out there?
To be less flippant, your assertion that a sphere is somehow "perfect" is fundamentally in error. ALL designs, including spheres, are engineering tradeoffs.  Look at it this way, even if the U.S. military wanted to spend a BILLION dollars develop...
Why are there so many wooden box speakers out there?
LOL. We just had a rather long thread on this previously. No, spheres are not "perfect" and neither are boxes.  Open baffle speakers (no box at all) rule for audio quality other than perhaps needing a larger woofer and more power. See previous dis...
Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
Well, I guess a good engineer could put drivers and an amp inside a concrete block that weighs about 300 pounds. Doubt it would sell very well. And Vibration dampening systems ARE important under turntables at the very least, regardless of what yo...
Open Baffle Experience
I’ve never had the pleasure to hear open baffle speakers, but I’ve seen plenty of reviewers saying they loved them. Even Steve Guttenberg, for "entertainment value" has switched from his beloved semi-permanent on loan Klipsch Cornwalls to PureAudi...
Book Shelf Speaker advice - Formerly Book Shelf Dilemma
Just want to mention that between now and Christmas, many speakers are on "special" if you look. For instance, Crutchfield has the Wharfedale EVO4.2 on sale for $999 now (no stands, you'd need to budget for some, perhaps Monoprice for now. You ju...
Are advances in technology making speakers better?
@mijostyn I did get to hear the large Advent at a small mom and pop stereo store near NC State in the late 1970s or early 1980s. All us poor students lusted after those and the ones from maybe Polk that looked like large coffins. We half expected ...
Are advances in technology making speakers better?
@grislybutter ah yes. I keep my phones for at least 5 years before moving on, even though others may chuckle at me. The only reason to upgrade is when it can't run the apps you want or because the new versions of software simply aren't written wel...
