How To Do You Measure the Quality of Your AC Power?
Just wanted to say thank you to everyone that replied. There is a lot of good information here and I’ve got some good paths to go down. Will definitely call my utility and follow up on that.
How To Do You Measure the Quality of Your AC Power?
I don’t think the electrician did any of that. I should have hired you! I think it was more of, “Well I tightened what lugs I could and no breakers are flipping so you don’t have a problem.” Thanks for all the good advice.
How To Do You Measure the Quality of Your AC Power?
Besides poor audio quality, two examples of what I’m experiencing are:1) Playing music with bass at low to moderate levels causes dimming lights.2) Slowly walking on a treadmill causes the lights in the room to substantially dim with each foot ste...
How To Do You Measure the Quality of Your AC Power?
That’s exactly the type of thing I wanted to hear about, tvad. Thank you!
How To Do You Measure the Quality of Your AC Power?
Maybe, but maybe not. What I have noticed about electricians and electrical engineers is that they approach it from the perspective of meeting code and not starting fires. That’s not a bad thing in general, but if you’re chasing high fidelity soun...
How To Do You Measure the Quality of Your AC Power?
A little backstory for the curious: When I moved to my current house, my audio quality decreased substantially. I spent a great deal of time investigating this and believe I’ve narrowed it down to the AC main. Multiple electricians have failed to ...
Occult noise and the pulse of sanity
Do you believe the hum was caused by the EM fields radiating out from the fan motor or from noise getting into the AC mains? For those of us with radon fans that run all the time, are we better off switching those fans off during listening sessions?
Switching to battery power
I’ve done it before: fully off-grid battery powered audio system. At the moment, my preamps are the only thing on the grid when I’m playing music. Long story short - battery power done right can sound fantastically smooth and detailed. Where it se...
Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Adaptor As Your Source
I’m not sure how the Lightning to USB adapter works. Does it send digital or analog audio out of it? The Lightning to 3.5mm audio sends analog out. That’s the one I am using. Very simple signal chain.
Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Adaptor As Your Source
Calvinandhobbes, did you let the system warm-up/burn-in when you switched to the Lightning Connector? When I first fired it up, I wasn't all that impressed. I immediately wanted to go back to the way my system was before. After letting it play for...
Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Adaptor As Your Source
Just wanted to chime in with another experience I had recently. I hooked up an Apple iPad via a 3.5 mm to lightning adapter and ran the signal to a tube preamp and then on to the rest of my rig. At first, I was not all that impressed until I let e...
Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Adaptor As Your Source
Thanks for the feedback. Ken’s article’s are always a fun read. I like his take on CD sound quality. I have found CD (with the right CD player) to be very hard to beat. I will have to look into a power conditioner. I’m wondering if there is a way ...
MQA actually tested
So we’re better off setting the sound quality to “HiFi” instead of “Master” within the Tidal app?
STUPIDLY high resolution pure silver interconnects
Just wanted to chime in (11 years later) to say that I have built the same cable that timtim speaks about. I used the same components they used except I believe my wire is a bit larger in diameter. I built this 2-3 years ago so can’t remember the ...
Why not a portable DAP as a streamer/DAC?
Yes, it’s a good idea. Some of these players have excellent DAC chips. Couple that with the ability to play DSD and high-rez PCM files, along with no AC wall connection, and you are left with a very capable source. I’m using an Astell & Kern r...
