How easily can you distinguish between different DACs?
You have received some insightful comments to your question. My experiences mirror @mikelavigne (i.e., "most dacs are decent"), @czarivey's comments on "voltage output", and @ghdprentice regarding the presence of "distortion and high frequency tr...
Server/Streamer - sonicTransporter i9 and Signature Rendu SE
Thank you @audiotroy  I am aware of the 432evo options and the interesting and thoughtful design features their servers bring to the table. I have moved from a highly modified Mac mini, to the then flagship Antipodes DX (still own), to Mojo's De...
Antipodes from the Antipodes
I have been using a different streamer/server but still have my Antipodes DX3.  I plan to reach out to them and ask what shortcomings that unit would have as a streamer only.  As they have constantly upgraded their line, they have mostly seemed to...
XLR cables for a reasonable price?
The standard addresses grounding and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) through connections between cable shields/screens, shielding enclosures, and any EMI circuitry.
XLR cables for a reasonable price?
I agree with @cleeds  Having industry professionals like Ralph around here at least provides interesting perspective and, in many cases, initiates discussions that result in me looking stuff up and learning new things. They all have their own wa...
XLR cables for a reasonable price?
If you don’t need the additional noise rejection of a quad cable, consider the twisted pair Mogami W2549, which shares the same materials and shielding of the W2534.   High Quality Balanced Microphone Cable Neglex Type #22AWG W2549 has been de...
How important are spikes?
@ditusa  Interesting article that consolidates a bunch of stuff I have read before, except I didn’t previously know that spikes were created to prevent speaker cabinets from dancing! I would like to see Mr. Varney debate Robert from Live-Vibe, t...
How important are spikes?
Many solutions can work well for equipment support, isolation, damping, and other audiophile purposes.  Just because a manufacturer shines it up, packages it, and sells it for a lot of money doesn't make it inherently better.
XLR cables for a reasonable price?
The balanced line standard often comes up here when discussing XLR cables.  Here is the standard and here is an article by Rane that provides additional context.  Also, see Chapter 3 of this article by Bill Whitlock, of Jensen Transformers, Inc. o...
How important are spikes?
Interesting thread in that you first asked the question almost three years ago and based on your post today it seems you maybe tried some stuff and came to your own conclusions since first posting. Related to your comment about "cushions under th...
XLR cables for a reasonable price?
I would like some recommendations on reasonably priced XLR cables that give excellent sonic performance. Start with reasonably priced XLR cables, Mogami Gold from Amazon, or maybe Blue Jeans Cables that use either Belden or Canare wire and then...

Real or Surreal. Do you throw accuracy out the window for "better" sound?
I have tried a variety of gear over the years and have mostly kept the stuff that I enjoy listening to.  My predominate criteria have been tone and dynamics, and I have been fortunate to acquire gear that is also quiet, smooth, and generally accur...
DAC DIRECT IN TO AMPLIFIER OR TO PREAMPLIFIER
@lanx0003  Although the average output impedance (OI) is rated at 300 and 600 ohms for SE and XLR line outputs, JA (Sterophile) pointed out that both SE and XLR OI can rise to 3150 and 3900 ohms at 20Hz. This necessitates an amplifier with at le...
Mains Power Cable DIY
@smaarch1 What is PC Triple C Ok, since you asked: Japanese PC Triple C copper is made in Japan’s Furukawa plant and is the next-generation version of the Japanese Ohno (Continuous Crystal) copper (a.k.a., Ohno continuous Cast Copper - OCC). F...
