How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
You mean Khozmo, right?http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/khozmo/1.html And this also might be of interest;http://www.6moons.com/industryfeatures/passive2/1.html

@mrdecibel , IME, impedance matching (not matching as in "equal" but rather low to high as you move down the chain) is more important than gain. If it were not, you could simply increase the output of your source...to 4V or 6V, but that alone does...
How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
From Nelson's B1 Buffer paper; Is impedance matching an issue? Passive volume controls do have to make a trade-off between input impedance and output impedance. If the input impedance is high, making the input to the volume control easy for the s...

I do not believe "gain" to be the main issue here.  IME, the reason some hear improvements in dynamics and bass when moving from a passive to an active preamp is due to improved impedance matching through the volume control and consistent current ...
Racks - what’s awesome without impacting my kids college plans?
Sound Anchor - if you want something that is solid, indestructible, well damped (internally with sand), and easy to level and adjust (using their lockable threaded spikes).  I made a quartersawn wood top shelf for mine, which dressed it up conside...
Absolute top tier DAC for standard res Redbook CD
Good points Matt.  The option for now seems to be running Ethernet from the music server into an endpoint that can output USB to the DAC.  I will try this in a couple of weeks when I get my DX back after the Gen3 upgrade.  Endpoint will be the SOt...
Does anybody not like Roon...based on SQ only?
Thanks again for the extra information.  I will be getting my Antipodes DX back as a Gen 3 in a few weeks and plan to use it as a server and then the SOtM trio as the endpoint.  My other option is a tricked out 2012 Mac mini that I have sitting in...

What if you are running everything as PCM and not using DSD, still good?

Thanks @astewart8944 , I went from DX to DX2 and now to DX3.  Shipping it out for the upgrade next week.  Your response is what I expected.  I will likely use this opportunity to give Roon a try.
Duelund DCA 12ga Hookup Wire
Did you try your build with and without Flexo or the Techflex product you referred to above? I wonder if it dulled or darkened the sound in any way?No, I have not tried it both ways so I couldn't say.  I like the idea of the vibration-damping pr...
Duelund DCA 12ga Hookup Wire
I made a set of balanced interconnects using WE 16ga wire and it sounded "thick" or a little too full to me.  I have since made balanced ICs using Duelund 20ga wire and I like the result.  There are many ways to do things but my suggestions are;Tw...
Audiophile class AB vs Hypex N-core class D technologies .
I had Acoustic Imagery Atsah monos, using the same NC1200 modules as Merrill's Veritas, and my experience was pretty much along the lines of what you all are reporting.  I owned them over a year and could not quite get on-board with the sound of t...
How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
Good point George, I haven't tried a preamp made from light dependent resistors yet.  I did try Tortuga Audio's tube buffer as part of their "tour" last year.  It was pretty good and I suspect putting that buffer in-line with their LDR passive wou...

The $699 Freya from Schitt seems like an amazing bargain for the price. If I didn't already have something great, and were on a tighter budget, I would definitely be interested. For passives, the only one remaining that interests me is Townshend...

Source output impedances in the typical range of about 100 - 500 ohms should easily drive preamps with input impedances of 10K or up....as long as the cables are kept reasonably short.  However, it must then be considered what happens between the ...
