DAC Choices - $5,000 to $7,000
Thanks so far.  I have owned a Lampizator L4 G4 (I believe that was the number) and it was ok but the soundstage seemed larger than believable at the expense of resolution and dynamics, particularly in the bass which was big (somewhat bloated) and...
McCormack Amps No Longer Manufactured?
Hi PatrickThe amp in the middle is a McCormack DNA-2 Limited Anniversary Edition (LAE), which was designed by David Reich of Theta. The amps on either side are Clayton M300s and the amps to the back are Lamm M1.2 Reference. Steve McCormack at SMc ...
Opening Record Store
You have received a lot of really good advice here, including;@millercarbon  No one knows the current worthlessness of the business like the current owner. @noromance  By keeping the name, inventory, and fixtures, he’s not really selling you an...
Canare 4S11
At $1.55/foot (Markertek), for a star-quad configuration, 11 awg aggregate conductors (4 @ 14 awg) per polarity, and polyethylene dielectric, 4S11 is certainly a bargain and it would probably take a lot of money to do significantly better. The oth...
A world class volume control for pennies on the dollar
Hello @teajay In your review of the SPL Elector and two SPL amplifiers you were impressed with their "overall silky-smooth presentation...grainlessness,,,balance where all frequencies are woven together in a natural, seamless manner...and great ov...
Connecting a DAC directly to an amp?
Guys,The Adagio does not bit strip, the volume control operates by changing the reference voltage so is not actually in the signal path.  The minus 10dB is optioned by a switch on the back and I do not have that engaged.  I am hearing the same thi...
Connecting a DAC directly to an amp?
This is like groundhog day for me.  After going a week running my DAC directly into my amplifiers using relatively short 1M interconnect cables, I continued rearranging my system layout and reintroduced my buffer/preamp between the DAC and my amps...
Does it matter the wire gauge used in interconnects?
Assuming things are relatively in balance, inductance or resistance are not as important for ICs as low capacitance, but low inductance does improve the performance of SCs, which is also what a cross-connected star-quad geometry does.I have been i...
Does it matter the wire gauge used in interconnects?
Back in the early 2000s, quite a few of us were building cables, which generated quite a bit of discussion over at Audio Asylum. In response to this question:What are the ideal LRC specs for analog interconnects and loudspeaker cables? Would a zer...
Help finding a simple but high quality buffer or preamp for remotely controlling volume
Thanks all so far.  I would still like to hear from folks who own or have heard the Benchmark or Hattor units.  The Hattor has exactly the form and function that I am looking for but I cannot find out too much about the sound.  The Benchmark has a...
Class D Technology
Thanks Tim for the positive comments on D-Sonic.  I am soon going to need to replace an aging 1984 era NAD 2140 that powers my outdoor system and I have been keeping an eye on D-Sonic for that purpose.
Class D Technology
TimClass D absolutely rocks watts per dollar (except of course for gallium-nitride transistor versions) so if they get the other stuff sorted they will be hard to beat.  My only comparisons were the Acoustic Imagery Atsah which are a Ncore NC120...
Connecting a DAC directly to an amp?
@shkong78  I connect Dave and HMS to Line Magnetic 508 pre input....It is working well....But I have Schitt Freya pre between Dave and my headhone amps to connect 20 ft balanced cables. The Freya seems like a well-designed, simple preamp to prov...
Whats your favourite track to play to the non hi-fi visitor?
Whatever they want to hear.
Class D Technology
if it weren't for efficiency & power, would there be any reason to own a Class D amp?Class D amps rock the category of watts per dollar, which makes them a good choice for powered subwoofers where the goal is control and damping of large dri...
