The Harbeth phenomenon I have a pr of 40.1's. They really are amazing speakers.I too attend live concerts regularly. I also have a musical household - my son plays piano and violin, I play violin, and my other son plays trumpet. I know what instruments should sound like...
When have A/B comparisons led you astray? How about when you shut your eyes, can you imagine that you are in the venue?Sometimes I can. With digital it's like I'm there but pixillated. With analog, sometimes it works but usually there is smudge.
When have A/B comparisons led you astray? Have you never - even for just one song - mistaken it for the real thing?
When have A/B comparisons led you astray? Last night I went to my son's Violin Master's Class.Small venue - maybe 10 to 15 people present.Piano and violin, that's it.I have been listening to my digital source lately at home. I'm having trouble figuring it out. I know it doesn't sound real...
When have A/B comparisons led you astray? Sure, this is a broad topic... It's a struggle for me to remember what it was like before I was married. But what I am interested in here is comparisons made within a Stereo System.I do think that my impressions at least 1 week after a change has b...

How close to the real thing? Well, if you play a musical instrument vs. listen to sound, they are obviously very different things!IMO nothing can aproach the connection you get to the music with playing - even listening in a concert hall. Any electronic copy and reproduction ...
What Do You Hear When You Adjust VTA? I agree, again. One thing that has helped me a lot is to play many records within a boxed set. Then you can be pretty sure the pressings are more or less uniform in vinyl thickness and the cutting angle. One set I have has aprox 100 records in it o...
Reminded once again of VTA criticality... I agree. The acceptable range is narrow - especially for line contact styli. Little changes make a big difference in making the sound sound musical.
What Do You Hear When You Adjust VTA? I hear a shift between muddy slow plodding muffled sound (VTA too low)- to shrill, hurt the ears, ringing nastiness. With my line contact stylus the correct setting is quite precise and the range of acceptable is narrow.
Why mono? I just installed a Lyra Helikon mono on a spare armwand for a Graham 2.2 The sound is really present compared to mono recordings on my stereo cart (Benz LP) with the preamp switched to mono.I have been thinking about why. The best I can come up wi... |
