Magnetar
I now own a Magnetar UDP 900. It is a real boat anchor. The transport is eons faster than anything else on the market and as a music transport is all you could ask for. I can’t speak to the DACs as I do not use them. What really sets it apart is t...
Audiophilia: Is it the pursuit of audio excellence or just a desire to tinker.
@jacobsdad2000  No question about it. The more devoted to tinkering the stronger the audiophile mania. I'm an easy one to explain. I am a tool freak and have been building stuff since I was 13. But, how do you explain a guy that has trouble with ...
Old records.
Many of us were not near as good with record hygiene back in the old days. Styluses were not as well polished and were of types that caused more wear. They were also in many instances larger then many modern styluses. Before giving up on 3000 rec...
Golden Ears?
@mikelavigne  Hows about 8 kHz. The term is presbycusis. Medicine does not consider hearing loss to be significant until it affects frequencies below 8 kHz which can affect speech perception. Many older audiophiles have virtually nothing above 12...
What happened to my room acoustics
First of all, your listening position need to be 5 feet closer. Things are actually worse then they seem. The Y axis is in 20 dB increments. Most systems I have seen use 5 dB increments. This is a very shouty curve with the bass lagging 10 to 15 d...
ATC buying advice
@soix  There may be advantages over regular methods in some designs but they pale in comparison to what can be done digitally. You have to remember the designer has no idea what environment the speaker is going to be placed in and the room is 50%...
ATC buying advice
@lonemountain  Hi Brad, DEQX does both speaker and room correction, separately. I greatly prefer the DEQX system which is more like the TacT system I am use to. I do not yet know how much manual tweaking I will have to do. As far as room correct...
Thoughts About Turntable Upgrades
@lewm  I just opened a Qobuz account. I use it to check out new music, but I have compared high res (24/96) files to the same file stored on my hard drive and there is no question the hard drive sounds better. It shouldn't, it is just numbers, so...
ATC buying advice
I hear a lot of support for "active" speakers. For speakers to be active the signal has to be digitized. This can lead to a lot of back and forth conversions. I am a firm believer in digital signal processing, it is a necessity if you want to get ...
Real or Surreal. Do you throw accuracy out the window for "better" sound?
@mahgister , No, I speak the most horrible english ever, but far better than I write. I am not a philosopher, I am a pragmatist. As others have mentioned, there is no such thing as accurate in regards to reproducing the actual event. With most s...
SL1200G - Tonearm shape from side question for owners
@chriscox000  That arm should be perfectly flat in side view, straight as a ruler. The S shaped curve is only in the horizontal as viewed from above. Either the arm tube is loose or it was damaged or not installed correctly.
Shipping woes and a partial solution
Better yet, just don't ship things. it is safer imagining they are being shipped.
Optimum speaker support
Just a question, @antigrunge2. How did you determine that the system had "unprecedented impulse response" with your new feet. When some people use this term their thinking is that the system sounds "faster." What that usually means is that the bas...
Discuss The Viv Lab Rigid Arm
@rauliruegas, @lewm  Lew is having lots of fun also☺
Discuss The Viv Lab Rigid Arm
@lewm @rauliruegas  Vinyl has emotional and sentimental ties to the past. It is also a lot of fun. For most people digital is rather boring and they assume it is lifeless. Great digital recordings are stunning and once you get into digital sign...
