As much as I try, I just don't get it........
Mr Decibel, you are absolutely correct. Listening to these videos or files is a complete waste of time. It is a blatantly unsatisfactory way to make any determination about anything.
TONEARM DAMPING : DAMPED OR NOT ? ? USELESS ? ? WELCOMED ? ?
Raul use to fix his tonearms with chewing gum. They were in dire shape and the chewing gum made them sound better. Is why he likes damping.Next he'll tell you that he like Double Bubble best. I'm a Wrigley guy myself.
TONEARM DAMPING : DAMPED OR NOT ? ? USELESS ? ? WELCOMED ? ?
lewm, yes, damping will broaden and lower the resonance peak which is why you want to use it in the situation where a tonearm is too heavy for the cartridge. BUT, if the tonearm is properly tuned to between 8 and 12 Hz you don't need it at all. Wh...
vinyl versus digital redux
Atmasphere! I have two original copies of It's a Beautiful Day! I loved it so much I bought another copy worried I would play the one to death. Orpheus, you need to check out Channel D's website. I use their Pure Vinyl program which will library a...
Do you use a Subwoofer when listening to stereo?
Atmasphere, phase is only half the issue time is the other one. I find it rather comical that people can say phase is not an issue. Wire one of your speakers 180 degrees out of phase and what happens to the bass. Any fundamental from impulsive bas...
vinyl versus digital redux
Interesting Atmasphere. I do have some Hi Res digital files that sound better than the original album. Led Zepplin One comes to mind. But, this may be due to better mastering. What is wrong with electricity? If it were not for electricity we would...
What are your thoughts on the "Edsels" of the audio history?
The Hill Plasmatronic Loudspeakers. I helped set up a pair. My first inclination was, you'd have to be out of your mind!
TONEARM DAMPING : DAMPED OR NOT ? ? USELESS ? ? WELCOMED ? ?
Raul, damping is a crutch for situations where you have a cartridge that is too compliant for the arm or an arm that is too heavy for the cartridge. With proper tonearm matching damping is not needed and indeed is a negative. It is like adding fric...
What's your definition of an audiophile?
An audiophile listens to equipment. A music lover listens to music. You could be either or both. Most of us are both. Some of us are hard to figure out.
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
Is Maplenoll still in Business?MikeL, It all comes down to the resonance frequency of the suspension if it is under 3 Hz both vertically and horizontally you are in business regardless of how you do it. Just mass is not enough. You can have footfa...
My thoughts on TT isolation methods.
Antigrunge2, again that might address footfall problems but it will not isolate the turntable from environmental rumble. I would prefer a good isolation platform over the wall shelf.Fuzztone, another happy Sota owner! Where do ball bearings come i...
My thoughts on TT isolation methods.
I guess I stepped on your toes townsend-audio. I just visited your site. Your seismic platform may be a reasonable solution for a turntable. It does place the load on top of the springs (compression) rather than hanging the load from the springs (...
My thoughts on TT isolation methods.
Gone, that does not work entirely. It will stop footfall problems but it will not stop environmental rumble. As an example, the loaded dump truck driving down the street will get through just fine.Townsend-audio, a little long in the tooth but no ...
Can anybody please help me identify a plug socket
That is a seriously old piece. Those are like two pin Din sockets. Go to Digikey and search their site.
vinyl versus digital redux
Atmasphere, it is my understanding that most of the old tapes have been digitized. Correct me if I am wrong but digital storage is certainly more robust. Once in numbers that "sleepiness" can be corrected with very modest EQ as well as doing neat ...
