Why Palladium in cables, wiring, etc. . .?
I feel that I've been called out (albeit sub silencio yet rightly so) regarding my snarky cynicism. Metal-o-the-month dubiousness aside, if it sounds right it's right by me. Lord knows, the last thing I want is to spark another of those all too fa...
Why Palladium in cables, wiring, etc. . .?
Once upon a time aluminum was the coolest, futuristic marketing item around. More recently, I suppose, titanium made a showing. Why buy a phone / headphones / book-end / widget made out of "metal," when you could have one made out of titanium? Who...
why don't tubed amps have headphone jacks?
Heh, look at me all learnin' and stuff.
Help with apparent RFI interference?
Hals, very interested in how you grounded the Marantz from a digital out. I'd love for that to be my fix, just not entirely sure how to go about doing it. Would you mind sharing some more details? (And, just for the record, please go ahead and ass...
why don't tubed amps have headphone jacks?
Pawlowski, cool. That said, I had intended to mean nothing more than you wouldn't want to drive cans off of speaker taps (or the final amplification bits of an amplifier intended to make speakers go). Can't imagine that cans on 250 + watts would f...
Cars R OK, but what kind of motorcycle do you have
How'd I miss this one? Been gone for too long. 2005 HD FXDXI (Dyna Superglide Sport). Live on 15th Street in NYC. Keep it on 13th street. Every time I get on it, I start and finish in the City. Love it. Nothing quite like rumbling down 5th Ave and...
What's a good tube pre-amp to match Bryston 4BST
I've used both a Rogue 99 Magnum and a VTL TL 2.5 with a Bryston 4b-st. Both worked pretty fine, but, have to admit, the Rogue and the Bryston always seemed to have lingering issues and never really did get along as well as I might have liked....
Help with apparent RFI interference?
I have tried other sources -- and no source at all. Any input selected from the HT receiver has the same noise, whether or not there's even something plugged into it. Thus, I'm guessing that it's not the particular source. Must either be RFI in th...
why don't tubed amps have headphone jacks?
Amps? I've never seen a headphone jack on an amp, tubed or solid state. In fact, you physically can't have one on an amplifier without adding a volume pot and an entirely seperate apmlification section (else you'd blow the cans). And if you did th...
Loud Snapping when turning amp ON and OFF
Yea, echoing many of the above, many amps have a time-delayed muting switch that kills the feed during powering on / off in order to avoid this issue. Some don't, however, and you get to listen to the nasty bits as they ramp up or down.Bryston, fo...
Audio Tweak gone bad...similar experiences?
I've found that the drunken penny is really the best way to go. Find a canditate of the appropriate vintage, and break it in by bathing it in pure grain alcohol for AT LEAST 24 hours. (I've found that vodka can also work well, but you'll need to b...
Best Country/Rock - Poll
Gosh, tough to figure out what does or doesn't fit in the definition. But a couple I feel the need to include:Chris Whitley -- "Living With the Law" and "Dirt Floor" are my favorites. Chris passed recently, and will be sorely missed. Also, two loca...
Thiel SCS3
I'm using one between a pair of 2.3's. For years I resisted – it is startlingly expensive for a center channel, I agree. Finally bit the bullet and found one used. What can I say, it's as nice as you would expect from Thiel. Expensive though it ma...
Your Favorite Music Fron N'Awlins?
For live shows, I've never seen anything, anywhere that can top the sheer energy and fun of Rebirth or Cowboy Mouth. Neither seem nearly as successful at recording, unfortunately....
Misleading ad titles and prices
Have to agree -- I ignore them. That said, I have always assumed that they come from dealers who want to talk to you in order to make the sale, and the ads are just teasers looking to rope people into the sell zone. By way of explanation, however,...
