Pro's and con's of different tube amps? I sold my Magnepan 3.6s which needed gobs of power to move to high efficiency speakers so that I could try low wattage tube amps. The advise I read on Gon was to start with inexpensive models and move up. That is exactly what I did. I sold my SS a...
Advice on speakers? Joe - I am recommending a 2 channel (integrated amp or separates) for music and a 5 channel receiver for home theatre. If you get high efficiency speakers, your amp will cost less. More power = more $ all else being equal.
Advice on speakers? Joe - It was the B&K receiver. To my ears, it was mid-fi for 2 channel but hi-fi for theatre application. I think putting 7 discrete high-powered amps plus a DAC/sound processor, tuner and preamp into a single chassis with a common power suppl...
Tube Ampp Almarro low level hum The hum came back after a few days on the springs. So the weight is the ultimate answer to this problem. I just need to find one that matches the ascetics of the amp :) Thanks.
Any reason not choose an Apogee Duet? Stubby - Hi. Yes, I ended up with the Exemplar Mini DAC. You do not see them on Audiogon but you might be able to get one from Exemplar. It bested my Resolution Audio Opus 21 which I sold for $2,400, having paid $2,600 for it a few years earlier. ...
Advice on speakers? Magsterone - I have a B&K 7.1 for my home theatre. It was a huge upgrade from my old trusty Denon. I ran it with Von Schweikert VR-2.s and VS surround speakers and a Denon DVD player. It sounded so good for movies, I decided to listen to music...
Tube Ampp Almarro low level hum I placed weights on the transfomers and indeed that solved the hum problem. Then I tried using springs under the amp to isolate it and that solved the hum problem without the weights. Thanks for all the great advice to solve the problem.
Any reason not choose an Apogee Duet? The nice thing about DACs is that they are easy to ship and swap out. I'd get the Duet and another one. Sell the one you are less happy with and buy another one. Do this until you have found your sweet spot. I did this with about 6 from $300 to $2...
High Current Monoblocks Without knowing a price range, it is hard to make a recommendation. But, the Parasound JC-1s are top notch and extremely high in the quality-to-dollar ratio. I understand that they get even better with modification.
Advice on speakers? I would get a pair of ZU Druids. They are incredible at the current prices of $1,700. You can add a $1,300 tube amp and have a system that works for both music and theatre - just switch out the speaker wires. The NAK av receiver is great for theat...
Tube Ampp Almarro low level hum The transformers are very secure on the chassis. With the suggestion of the current, I checked my circuit and found some other appliances (a laser printer and scanner) that were plugged into different plugs on the same circuit. I moved those and h...
Tube Ampp Almarro low level hum Jax2 - good thinking. If it is a transformer, is it humming because it is aging? Malfunctioning? Or is that just how transformers are? Can I address the source of the problem or just deal with the symptom? Thanks for your comment.
Leben CS600 or Almarro a318 for Tannoy TD12? I've had an Almarro 318B (to Zu Driud speakers) for about 5 months and tried a wide assortment of tubes. All are very pleasant. Highly recommend it. I asked a tube dealer to put together a samling of 6SN7 and 6SL7 tubes and I got 9 different tubes...
High efficiency speakers ZU Druids. 103 DB and a wonderful speaker. Bass galore and unified sound as it uses a single drive plus a super tweeter. BTW - they move quickly when they come up on Gon. I've had mine for about 3 months and have fallen head over heals for these b...
SET Integrated Amps I second the Almarro 318b. It is such a powerhouse for high efficient speakers. Price is silly cheap for the quality. See the 6 Moons review. |
