Do you leave your components on 24/7?
I should have emphasized that I was referring to vintage gear (my specialty, and what I listen to at home), and since I typically like to buy once (I drive a 16 year old Corolla) long term reliability is paramount 'cause this boy don't like to rep...
Do you leave your components on 24/7?
We repair technicians who work for the manufacturer love when you leave them on 24/7. Over many years the heat damage to the circuit boards or the brittle fragility of overheated wires in point-point wired amps makes them unrepairable (well, beyon...
Budget Strategies forTightening up Bass?
Rear port, right? Firing into corners...I'd try different schemes of port damping using various plug materials. My opinion.
Blue Ray that Plays rented Movies????
Buy regular Lemon Pledge in the yellow can and spray the offending disc, wipe it off with a lens cleaning cloth or super soft towel and see if that helps. Pledge fills in fine scratches and usually works like a charm for a few viewings. I use it o...
Recommendations for a used Receiver
I would recommend against the Arcam AVR2XX-3XX units. They sound great, but with their power supply regulators on the motherboards, got way too hot and ate their own solder joints. At a former Arcam service center, we made a profit (for the first t...
AVR 300 Powers up, 8 seconds, powers off
As with MOST brands, including McIntosh and nearly all others, there are almost never disassembly instructions. (My other employer dCS Ltd., now their Service Manuals are totally comprehensive and written with everything you need, but this is rare...
AVR 300 Powers up, 8 seconds, powers off
Oh, I have the documentation you need to fix this, but there are no instructions on removing the motherboard and that alone is daunting; you need to remove the dozens of philips screws on the back so the back panel can be pulled away allowing the ...
AVR 300 Powers up, 8 seconds, powers off
I used to be the tech for an Arcam Service Center, and let me tell you the entire line of AVR's (2XX-3XX)apart from the AVR200, had overheating motherboards and the new (then)lead-free solder and the rectifier diodes failed like mad.The problem wa...
CD-Receiver Recommendations
Arcam Solo Movie 2.1, and as with the Solo Movie 5.1 you get SACD, DVD-A and HDCD decoding. 65WPC. I regret selling mine.Great feature I fell in love with: it has a built in alarm clock so you can wake up to your favorite FM station or CD.
SS integrated amp that has tube like qualities
Italy's Audio Analogue makes super sweet integrated amps that are very close to my Sony V-Fet amp (now the V-Fet does sound like a tube in harmonic richness; I have the low powered TA-4650 with only two VFET devices per channel and often prefer it...
Best cdp with integrated preamp and remote?
Red Book only: Nagra CDC. Unbelievable.SACD and CD: dCS Puccini w/ U-Clock. Holy cow. Both absolutely top shelf.Disclosure; I am Nagra USA and dCS Ltd. US Service Manager.
SACD player with digital input
I say you'd be far better off buying a used top shelf Red Book CD player than a mediocre SACD Player for the same money. Not many high end SACD players with a digital input at $1000, even used.Compromise for price sake to obtain the superior mediu...
Small Preamplifier choices?
I know: way over budget; even used. I re-read the original thread. My bad.
Small Preamplifier choices?
Pre-owned Nagra PL-L tube preamp (if you cannot buy new), it's incredible sound, tiny, and with inputs and outputs including power connector on the sides; only 10 inches deep.Same size unit with a phono stage is the PL-P but you lose the remote ca...
Analog tube amp/pre-amp for home theater use?
I use my HH Scott 222D in my video rig (2.1 only using DVD, no surround) and am amazed at how much of the movie's soundtrack fills the room. In ZERO hurry to go 5.1 and sacrifice the musicality for back fill.
