Does removing the plastic covers on caps help? Really not worth getting into here, but you should audition some 47 Labs gear when you get a chance - It will make you realize "measured performance" has absolutely nothing to do with musicality. Keep an open mind and don't shortchange yourself.
Does removing the plastic covers on caps help? The comment above assumes that the plastic around an electrolytic capacitor is an integral part of the design and is used to damp vibrations. Given that 99% of capacitors found in high-end equipment are also used in computers, calculators, VCR's, ...
Where does one obtain lead shot to fill stands Try a local gun or specialty sporting goods supply. Hunters use shot to pack their own shotgun shells.
Tube amp kit. Where can I find it? ...Don't forget to check Welborne Labs at: http://www.welbornelabs.com/Ron Welborne makes excellent sounding and well engineered kits that offer excellent value for the money.
Brubeck's 'Time Out' listeners Mprime, if you listen closely just after the finish of the Desmond solo (1:50) you'll hear a distinct change in the tempo and what sounds like a phase shift - even the placement of the instruments in the soundstage shifts enough to let you know th...
Brubeck's 'Time Out' listeners I just replayed my 20 bit recording of Take Five listening for the "reflection" you describe. I heard only kick drum thwacks at 2:37 and again at 4:18 - neither of these relate to the tape splice i'm referring to which occurs at 1:50 following Des...
Brubeck's 'Time Out' listeners I believe what you are hearing is a tape splice, or at least that's what it sounds like on my system. Most likely, the engineer recorded several drum solos and the "best" solo was then spliced into the "best" piano recording. Typical studio tricke...
experience with low powered set amps and proac 2s I listened to response 2's with Welborne Labs Laurel's (7.5 wpc 300B) for several years. My room is 12' x 12.5' x 7'.The sound of the 300B seems to match the '2's well and in your modest sized apt. should provide enough power for everything but la...
Best line conditioner??? I've had excellent results using both the Welborne Labs "Gatekeeper" and the Shunyata "Hydra" in my system (currently use both)These units are passive (unlike the Tice) and do not seem to restrict dynamics or cause any ill effect on the sound. Hyd...
47 Labs Flatfish/Progression Upgrade I auditioned a unit at the manufacturers (Brian) home and bought one on the spot. The differences between a double Humptied unit and Brian's battery power supply are not suttle and well worth the money IMO. The fit and finish of the product is com...
SUN 2A3 single ended triode..... The Fi "X" would be on my short list. Get the Magnequest OPT upgrade for best results. Also, if you're handy with a soldering iron, the Bottlehead 2A3's & 300B kits are supposed to be very nice parallel feed units in the 1-1.5K range.
Speaker break in period It is definately NOT a myth - the rubber or foam driver surrounds, cones, crossover parts (inductors, resistors & caps)and wiring all need to break-in for 100-200 hours before the speaker sounds the way the mfgr. intended.
Comments on Audio Note CD Players Budrew, I cannot comment on the sound of the AN vs. EMC-1 but I can tell you that the AN DAC 1.2 (1,100.00 kit) gives my 47 Labs Flatfish/Progression (8,200.00) a SERIOUS run for the money. The inexpensive(?) DAC 1.2 is slightly warmer sounding ov...
Static Problem Try "zapping" your system and records with a Zerostat, or apply Radio Shack (or Cling Free brand)anti-static spray to your components and cables periodically.
Kyocera CDP owners, remote control? If all Kyocera CD players used the same remote, I believe I have what you're looking for. I own a (broken) Kyocera CD player (DA301??) and the remote is functional and in good condition. Email me if interested. |
