Best Rock Albums in 2009, so far
Some good ones listed already. I'd add:Jeff Beck "Performing This Week"Don Dixon & The Jump Rabbits "Nu Look"Alejandro Escovedo "Real Animal"IMHO, only the Beck record is really notable (he can play a little bit, huh?), but the other two are f...
any early 80's alt/soft punk fans out there?
The cowpunk crew can be extended to include all the early Alejandro Escovedo bands (Rank & File, etc) and Chuck Prophet stuff (Green and Red, IIRC). There's also James Mastro's post Bongos group, Health and Happiness Show - although they might...
Integrating JL Subs
You can use a Velodyne SMS-1 subwoofer controller to EQ and cross the subs only - without touching the main signal path. If your pre-amp has multiple main outs, you can add a second output from your pre-amp to the SMS-1 and leave the connection to...
Snell A7 Illusion
Spatine,Unless you have a pipe organ recording (or 2 or 3), the odds are high that you don't own anything that hits the low 20s. Very few rock music cds have any meaningful signal under 35hz, unless they include a synthesizer.Marty
Mothership - The Inspiration
If you'd like the one track that - IMHO - qualifies as the most unlikely choice for "along the lines of" Led Zeppelin, you might want to try "Come" by Fleetwood Mac. (Yes, Fleetwood Mac.) It's on "Say You Will". MartyBTW, at the risk of infuriatin...
Merlin VSM
Any of the Merlin VSMs will provide a heckuva lot more bass extension than your Kef monitors - whether that's enough to satisfy you, who knows?. IME, the VSMs will be -3 db somewhere around 35hz in most rooms of your size. The more recent versions...
Blu-Ray movies
Synth - those two films couldn't be more different. Hancock has a brain in its head. But - I will confess -the world seems to agree with your take on "Hancock". (IIRC, it bombed both at the box and with critics.) BTW, I loved "Heaven's Gate" (long...
Impossible? Small towers, efficient, musical, loud
Oops, your post says NO ISSUE with bass boom - I misread it. My bad. As Emily Litella put it "never mind".Marty
Impossible? Small towers, efficient, musical, loud
I agree with Goat's general statement re: Merlins not being the first choice for rock music (and, in particular the VSM SE that I suggested) because of less "thump" below app 100hz.. But, but, but...Your desription of the sound in your room and th...
Impossible? Small towers, efficient, musical, loud
You might want to consider an older generation pair of Merlin VSM, like the SE. These speakers were IMHO voiced a little thin through the mid-bass and I found that the octave to octave balance actaully benefited from near (front) wall placement, t...
Blu-Ray movies
I'm a little surprised that no one has mentioned "Hancock".Wonderful picture and sound (special effects heavy) plus it's a really clever, very funny, ocassionally touching and -IMHO- wildly underrated film.Marty
Any feedback on Rythmik Audio Subwoofers?
I use a pair of Rythmik 12" subs in my music only system. Measured response in my room is flat to 30hz(technically, it's down app 2 or 3db)without EQ. I use a Velodyne SMS-1 sub controller to smooth a couple of room nodes and extend response to 25...
Mirage Omni 350 omnipolar
BTW,Did anyone notice that Vann's has the Mirage 150 monitors available at app. $150/pr. I suspect that some A'goners routinely spend that on wine by the glass (okay, by the bottle, anyway).Marty
Mirage Omni 350 omnipolar
Pete,Bassbusters are resonators tuned to a specific frequency which allows them to "absorb" excess energy in the range around that frequency. This really, really works...no audio magic or other mysticism is involved.I gather that your device isn't...
Mirage Omni 350 omnipolar
Pete,If your bass issues are mainly in the octave around/above 80hz (true of a LOT of speaker/room combinations), the addition of a "bassbuster" (hemholtz resonator) will likely work wonders. It did for me.Marty
