Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
The big unaddressed question from the OP is "What constitutes 'relatively clean'".   At 85db in a mid-sized room, most 8" woofers are distorting horribly.  The good news is that the ear isn't terribly sensitive at such low frequencies, so you don'...
Speaker wattage question
Per the "danger of clipping" comments already seen here, the off-take is that you're more likely to damage a tweeter with an underpowered amp driven too hard than you are with an amp that has "too much power".
Please Support Music Education
Erik,Your OP is certainly worthwhile and Czarivey's response is what it is.  I agree that making music education available to public school students is valuable - for pretty much the reasons that you state.  Will that type of exposure create a mus...
Atmasphere amps trustable?
Mtoc,The Atmasphere amps (like all OTLs) aren't necessarily a great match for every speaker, and they're known for producing a lot of heat, but they are highly regarded when properly mated.  The company has been around forever.  I owned an early p...
You can only take 5 albums to a deserted Island...
PacMan,Your selections bark up a very different tree than mine, but Tony, Toni, Tone is a great dark horse choice.  I'd probably choose "Sons of Soul", but "House" is an excellent album, too.  Raphael Saadiq is a generally overlooked talent, IMO.
THE most sonically dissappointing (lp) you own of great music?
Todd Rundgren's "Nearly Human".  A unique album combining songs that are about as good as popular music gets with SQ that's  about as bad as modern recording gets.

To Thom’s notion of hearing somethin new with repeated listening -my picks both go there aggressively and don’t.I was definitely thinking along those lines for my choices. The four guitarists I chose to bring along (Richard Thompson, Lindsey Bucki...
Best speakers for Pink Floyd?
Big MBLs.  Cranked LOUD.  Preferably in a large room with plenty of black lights.Youll have to to move to Colorado or Washington for the other key to legally enjoying the music of Pink Floyd to the fullest possible extent.
What early 70's rock bands had violins?
Gatemouth Brown was a blues guitarist who also played the fiddle.  Not quite a rock guy, and his heyday was in the 1950s, but he was around the rock scene in 70s, too.I think Roxy Music's Eddie Jobson turned up here and there for other bands, too.

Thom,Funny thing about Teles (and the variants thereon)...I own several really outstanding boutique variations, but I end up playing my good old, modestly priced Fender American Standard (tho it's been modded with Barden pups) more than any of em....
Best Small Floorstanding Speaker under $2K
Brimel,The Maggie .7 is about 4 1/2 feet tall, 15" wide and maybe six inches deep (stand depth). The smaller MMG is about 6" shorter. The former’s bass extension gets down into the 45 hz region, the latter is more like 50hz. The .7 was $1400 and t...

Best Small Floorstanding Speaker under $2K
I'll second the Ohm recommendation and add Magnepan.  The latter is tall, but has a small footprint.
The Best & Rarest of all Stereo Gear
Two brands come to mind:MFA (Moore, Frankland and Assoc).  Bruce Moore had his own eponymous company, too, which produced the Companion (sic?) preamp.  I think it was his highest profile design and it had its moment in the sun some time back.  How...
Obscure bands
LenMc801 is a good choice (provided they're obscure enough), but they did release several live albums in addition to their sole studio release.  I'd assume that "801 Live" (their first release) is their best known recording, but the studio record ...
