A thin and elegant system?
You could probably build a nice $6k system around the Essence electro stats ($3400ish pair) plus a sub, with modest electronics and source components.  The speaker is 4' tall by 5" deep and wide and produces excellent sound, tho little bottom end.
Long lost songs
2channel8You're a stud!  I was 100% certain that I'd never find anything by Froom (or even any info about him).  Also, I hadn't heard of music stack til this thread.  I just ordered it.  Thanks so much for posting.
Need Small Bookshelf Speakers With a Big Sound
Another though occurred to me : Red Rose Ribbon Monitors from Mark Levinson (the man, not the company).  The front grill cloth extends a few inches above the baffle (to protect the baffle-less ribbon tweeter), but it's otherwise just a nicely fini...
Long lost songs
I have a variation on this theme.  One of my all time favorite ballads is called "Pretending To Care" by Todd Rundgren.  It's a demanding vocal that's been covered many times, including at least once by an operatic soprano whose names eludes me at...
Your favorite one-man band!
Maxnewid,Funny you should mention Todd Rundgren.  On his record A Capella, every sound is Todd's voice (often electrically manipulated).  It's kind of an ultimate "one man band" in that he needs zero strings (or keys, or anything else). That album ...
Mellow speakers
Older generation Sonus Faber speakers fit the "mellowness" bill, but  I'm not sure that there were any floorstanders in their line back in that day.   You could also look at the Verity Parsifal/Encore, if your budget allows.  I use Ohms as my main...
Your favorite one-man band!
I was at this show -My boy Lindsey Buckingham armed with an electric guitar, a looper, some effects pedals and a click/rhythm track:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2m-hKHMfs0
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
Don,Most two-way, 8" woofer models that I’ve seen cross at 2200hz or higher, well above the middle of the mid-range. OTOH, lots of three way speakers cross to the woofer between 300 and 400 hz which is lower than middle of the mids, but closer. Ma...

You might want to consider the Gallo CL-2 from the Classico line.  It looks like the Classicos (which meet your decor requirements) might have laid an egg commercially.  Gallo dropped the prices a fair bit and Underwood HiFi was discounting them, ...
Single driver loudspeakers
Another variation is the "full range" four inch Jordan driver in a transmission line cabinet.  I wanna say Carolina Audio (among others) sells/sold this breed of animal.  I've never heard this type of speaker, but I once worked with a guy who owne...
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
Unfortunately, htshack.com seems to have removed most of its subwoofer test database.  By memory, I wanna say that the 8" subwoofers typically produced about 4 or 5% THD at 50hz at 85 DB (in a quasi-aechoic set up that effectively removes room nod...
Your last concert was to see who and when?
I saw Culture Club with the LA Symphony Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl last night.  Boy George has long been a favorite singer of mine but he was merely good enough (rather than impressive) last night.  It may be what he's always sounded like out...
Outboard crossover? Why not?
Active x-overs certainly offer theoretical advantages and (generally speaking) I'm a big believer.  Digital, active x-overs offer even more theoretical advantages and (generally speaking) I'm an even bigger believer. All passive x-overs (internal o...

Obligny,That scenario represents a wonderful opportunity to learn to play the Ukulele!
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
Tim,My statement re distortion at 85db wasn't loaded, I cited the source - htshack.com.  Go look for yourself. However, I neglected to specify one condition and should clarify a second.  I was focused on low bass, but didn't mention the frequency a...
