Techinics Sp-10 Mk2a break-in period
In my experience there is no break-in period for caps. However.. each cap brand / type has a different tonal quality. I find that in building tube amps this is widely accepted as the truth.
Phono Stage Selection - PH-16 or Hagerman Cornet3
Not much to add other than i was in the same position that you were a few years ago. Having built my own guitar amps I was comfortable with a soldering iron. I ended up going from a Jolida JD-9 to a Hagermann Bugle2 that I built myself. In hindsig...
Upgrade from Technics 1200 MK2? $1-$1.5k budget
Thanks everyone.Surprisingly, I was able to dial in anti-skate by ear after reading through a few forum posts. Onhwy61 -- many thanks for the direction. Now, as someone earlier in the thread pointed out, I can spend ~$500, send the 1200 to KAB and ...
Upgrade from Technics 1200 MK2? $1-$1.5k budget
Hi Everyone,Just wanted to loop back give an update. I ordered a few things to aid in setup: HiFi News setup record, Shure stylus force gauge, bubble level. After a complete setup things sound much better. Using the proper tools - I found that thi...
Upgrade from Technics 1200 MK2? $1-$1.5k budget
Johnnyb53 et. al. thanks for your inputTo answer some questions:+ Headshell = ortofon. Does the Sumiko or LpGear ZuPreme lock into place well? In my setup, I can twist the ortofon even when it's screwed down. There is quite alot of excess toleranc...
Stylus bent - AT120E/T, Technics 1200
Hi Johnnyb53 -- Thanks for your input. I've been following your thread on the AT150MLX cart and respect your option quite a bit. After I ran though the setup, things sound better, but not perfect. The stylus is still a skew slightly though. I supp...
Stylus bent - AT120E/T, Technics 1200
Guys - thanks for the help. I bought the 1200 used and just am now noticing some strangeness with playback. The cart just wasn't tracking well for the past few months so I finally started to look into things (i've had it for a year).Long story sho...
Jolida JD9: I think I over-bought. Alternatives?
Hiho -Yep, I hear you. I thought about it, but didn't want to mod it (even it wasn't permanent). I bought the jolida to get that warm tube sound. Bypassing it would have removed the primary deciding factor of me buying it to begin with. Well, that...
Jolida JD9: I think I over-bought. Alternatives?
Hi Everyone,I took Jedinite24 and Gadfly's advice and bought a Bugle 2 Kit from Jim Hagerman. http://www.hagtech.com/bugle2.html I am absolutely blown away by it's performance. It's exactly what I was look for. We all love products where the price...
Jolida JD9: I think I over-bought. Alternatives?
Hiho - Thanks for your posts -- the schematic analysis really helps. I don't think I'll modify it though. I'd rather pay (at some point) and get a better cart that is more inline with the JD9 expectations. Or sell it now and get something in the f...
Jolida JD9: I think I over-bought. Alternatives?
Going a little further with the "high outputs sound better" theory My impression is that the high outputs provide more sensitivity which = more detail. I have the older JD9 with trim pots on the low output. This basically allows me to attenuate th...
Jolida JD9: I think I over-bought. Alternatives?
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. So regarding the high outputs. I read through many forum threads AG, AK, etc and the overall consensus is that high outputs sound better. So, out of curiosity, I'm trying to get there with what I have. I had 12...
Jolida JD9: I think I over-bought. Alternatives?
Yah, tried all of that. I was really angling to use the high outputs, but even with them all off, the signal is too hot. 12au7's didn't help either. Using the low outputs is the only thing I can do with it.
Best phono preamp under $500?
I've been on the same quest for the past few months. So far, I've tried a few different ones:$200 Cambridge 651p $200 Musical Fidelity V-90 LPS$450 (Original) Jolida JD9 (used, from the Maryland factory)For the money and performance, you can't go ...
Optimal Phono Stage Output?
1Khz test tone, measure the output in mV. Should be around 200mV.Done deal. Sounds pretty good. With a 5mV cart, I would not go this route again... It sounds good, but I think the sweet spot for this preamp is is a lower output cart. I'll get some...
