What is the perferred material for a TT shelf?
You guys have me thinking that I may have chosen the wrong material, or perhaps the wrong decoupling method.  Am I better off with a large set of spikes under my acrylic than I am with the Herbies Audio Lab Grungebuster Dots?
original vs. current system
Ah, the DAC and phono pre also had a lot of changes.Cambridge DACMagic to the PS Audio PWD II.  The phono pre went from a little NAD PP, to a PS Audio GCPH, then to an Audio Research, and finally to a Whest.

I'd guess many have evolved quite a bit.  In the early days, as a poor college student and waiter in a restaurant, I had an Acurus 100 watt amp and an Acurus preamp.  That stayed with me for years and years.  I had a pair of Canton monitor speaker...
What is the perferred material for a TT shelf?
I went to my local acrylic workshop in an industrial area and had them custom make mine. It consists of two 1" slabs of clear acrylic. The top one has a channel routed out to the shape of an acrylic cover I had made so when it sits on top, it can'...
Lyra Delos Cartridge Loading Recommendation for Whest PS.30R
Thank you Moonglum, that is great info.  That thread is intense!
Building a system from scratch (other than speakers)
Nice job on the amp, that Rogue looks great!  I still say kill off the CD player.  Rip your CDs, play them through a player such as the Bluesound Node and feed that to your great DAC.  That will eliminate the CD tick.  You ought to be able to get ...
Phono stage gain setting to match preamp and power amp capabilities
I tried the Whest at 72db gain, and it overloaded the preamp.  loud popping sounds from the speakers... Ouch!
Phono stage gain setting to match preamp and power amp capabilities
So, I moved the entire rack around.  Hours of fun!  You can see what I did here https://systems.audiogon.com/systems/5421 if you look at the 1st and 2nd photos, you'll see the changes.  It doesn't look as pretty as it did before, but perhaps I can...
Phono stage gain setting to match preamp and power amp capabilities
No problem Al, thank you very much for your valuable input so far!  I have completely rearranged the rack, components, and cables to move the phono stage as far from any other power supply as possible, and I am being particularly careful to route ...

Al, would you mind a brief phone chat with me? Thank you!Mark305-775-3020
Phono stage gain setting to match preamp and power amp capabilities
To recap, some say lower the phono stage gain, and some say raise the phono stage gain.  Does anyone want to back up their argument with some supporting evidence?Almarg, As for amplifier interference, I take it you saw my system photo. Is there an...
Phono stage gain setting to match preamp and power amp capabilities
Is there a way to listen and measure the noise properly?  As in, can I turn the volume up, have the input selector on phono, and just listen with nothing playing?  Or is that not a way to isolate and listen to noise only? If I could do something i...
Building a system from scratch (other than speakers)
Hello,If you nee to purchase amp, preamp, digital source, and phono source, I agree with one of the posters above, I would look at a integrated amplifier for sure.  I would go heavier duty on the turntable/arm/cartridge than I would on amplificati...
$800 to spend on speakers, $1500 on whole system
just realized those Totems may be in need of repair for that price.  Worth looking into though, seems like a very good price, and the seller is not sure if there is a problem or not.

I agree with the peach tree recommendations. I had a decco in my office driving a pair of very modest PSB bookshelf speakers, and the combo was great. I had my computer plugged into the peachtree unit via USB.  The Nova is even better.  There is a...
