Which classified section do you peruse first?
Actually, I check by manufacturer first, not component. After I've checked out my favourite manufacturers, then I'll browse the "new today" listings to overview everything else that is new to market and see if anything catches my eye.
Speaker life expectancy: How long can you buy used
I had to throw my thirty year old speakers away. Then again, I only paid $40 dollars for them used. The speakers you're looking at are a great buy. As long as the surrounds are good, they will last many more years.
This getting ridiculous / a third Hi Def format
Wait! There's more! Don't forget MVI (Music Video Interactive) discs, which are just now being rolled out.
Will older films be produced on blu-ray or HD?
I think the answer is quite simple. They will be produced if the company thinks they can make money on it. And based on the music industry, companies make a lot of money selling consumers what they already own in a new "improved" format. Toss out t...
Actual Home Theater Explosions
Interesting, but I can think of no reason in physics why it wouldn't produce the same effect if the second sub was in the same room. I think that the increase in effects was simply because you added a second sub to augment the first.
Cable Auctions by Manufacturers
There was another thread on this a couple of months ago. You might want to check the archives to see if you can find it to get other opinions. If a cable is hand made with exotic parts, I think it might be expected that there would be some delay in...
Upgrading with electronic crossovers?
Electronic crossovers are a significant upgrade but only if the speaker designer intended for the speaker to be upgraded in this fashion. Speakers are designed as a package. The components are complimenatary. If you change one part, the other part...
Aaaargh. Please help Viridian select a new TV.
I just wanted to add a few extra comments I thought of while daydreaming at work today. The first concerns screen size. I mentioned 55-60 inches. Upon further reflection, I would also suggest the 50-55 inch range. The sweet spot in the mass market, ...
Aaaargh. Please help Viridian select a new TV.
As a regular here at Audiogon, I don't think there's too much we can tell you that you don't already know. And you certainly know that whatever anybody says, somebody else is going to totally disagree with it, so we'll end up being no help anyways...
What Record Clamp for LP12?
The LP12 wasn't designed to be used with a clamp. However, if you're feeling adventurous, J.A. Michell make a clamp that sits very lightly on the table because it tightens with a collet. Some people use this with their LP12 and get what they consid...
Monitor Audio Made in China?
If it's built to spec it doesn't matter whether it's built in China, on Mars, or by Swiss mountain gnomes.
Suggestions for small shelf sytem....
You don't mention budget. In the absence of this information, I will suggest that there are some nice "one-box" systems like the Arcam Solo or Linn Classik.
Why does this old tube gear sound so good?
Tubes are an old and mature technology. As a result, tube based technology has been good for a long time, if implemented properly. And I believe it is generally accepted that early Mac equipment was well engineered for its time. I don't think it w...
System psychology, or just psyched out?
I agree with what you say. There is no objective "best" or most "true to life" equipment/system. If there was, then it would soon be recognized as such and everybody would own one, or aspire to own it. In the absence of an objective "best", prefer...
Watts up with the Linn Majik 2100 amplifier?
No amp puts out exactly what it is rated at in all situations. It will depend upon how it is tested, the frequency measured, the speaker etc. etc.
