Default standard for speaker "sensitivity" measurement listings? Anechoic? In-room? Other?
HIlde45, yes you get it. the challenge is many want to assign "brown" a specific value. Will we all know for certain what color your table is if you call it a "brown"? Saying a speaker is 92dB efficient means zero. Saying its 91dB SPL 1w/1m at 1K ...
Default standard for speaker "sensitivity" measurement listings? Anechoic? In-room? Other?
Jim Salk might have built his own "anechoic room".  Some passionate engineers do exactly that, build one in their office or their warehouse or factory.  They are not necessarily true anechoic, as that is very expensive, but it can give you an idea...
Default standard for speaker "sensitivity" measurement listings? Anechoic? In-room? Other?
I would say only 1% of speaker makers have access to an anechoic chamber. And extremely few of those have access to a chamber large enough to work below 100Hz. Even the few that do have chambers use them mostly for research and product development...
What is the best HEAVY METAL speaker?
Do the ATC 150s I sold Mettallica count?  Brad
Do the surrounds really need much power
I would say its not about bandwidth as much as dynamic range.  All the special effects are sent to surround channels and can be QUITE dynamic.  Explosions, doors thudding closed, etc.  You need significant power to support all these noises they st...
Best Speaker Choice for my very "non-audio-friendly" Living Room
A wide dispersion LCR mounted right to the stone fireplace would work well.  From my ATC world, a SCM 12i which has a steel plate to mount to in the back and Adaptive Technology stuff to use as the "arm" to the bracket.  This is how studios and po...
Best Speaker Choice for my very "non-audio-friendly" Living Room
Actually its not about brand but about following basic room guidelines. Smaller nearfields placed near the listener but far away from the room boundaries is the goal. Having more energy at your [listening] location direct from the speaker vs refle...
Supply chain affecting anyone?
Most of the examples of "I got mine fast" are cases of existing inventory. Metal is a problem affecting everyone and the raw material (slugs and blanks etc) come from China. Chances are good they are sitting out a sea. Once existing inventory is g...
Considering ditching 5.1 for a soundbar; suggestions?
Why not use the LR thoughput on a surround receiver or preamp to feed your audiophile preamp which feeds your audiophile amp and audiophile L/R speakers? Most of these receivers/preamps are set up to allow pass through in stereo and then those cha...
Overhead speakers for Atmos 5.1.2 system
I won’t comment as to exact model, but 4 ceiling speakers is what ATMOS calls for, 2 in front of you and 2 behind you. THis is important to the ATMOS mix as the 2 in front 2 in back is critical to conveying motion in film, space in music. 2 sort o...
Fried my Wilson Watt Puppy 7 tweeters, now what?
Tweeters usually fry over clipping of the amplifier, as the tweeter heats up trying to track a square wave. Under powering is most often the root cause of clipping, but not the only cause. The non linear nature of power output and SPL means a smal...
Rogers LS3/5A Need Help
Nothing will sound quite like the original KEFs- find a pair of Rogers with damage to woofers and cannibalize?    Brad
Speaker and amp pairing
I'm with Henry. I don't get the obsession with sensitivity, especially when transducer engineers often deliberately choose a lower sensitivity driver set to get improved bandwidth performance.  It should be noted sensitivity is relevant only in pa...
ATC SCM50ASL Pro vs ATC SCM 50ASLT
IN the US prices of hi fi cabinet 50s/100s came down about year ago as to get them closer in price to the pro models.  It's not just a "black" vs veneer choice, its a significantly more than that which is why they are different in price.  Pro is a...
Speaker and amp pairing
If you aren't absorbed into the tube vs solid state thing, just buy a larger 100W to 150W per channel solid state amp from a reputable audio brand and you should be okay.  Even new NAD and Yamaha larger amps sound okay vs older amps from 20 years ...
