Speakers or Turntable upgrade
Im impressed that you. focused on the single two most important aspects of the system: the transducers.  This is where the energy changes from one form to another and therefore is the single most important process.   A phono cartridge changes mech...
Proac Response 3.8 stereo imaging is not centered
If you swap speakers and the problem moves, it’s likely the speaker. Crossover components don’t fail very often while a mechanical thing like a driver is far more likely to have an issue. You could go one more step and swap the effected driver onl...
Bookshelf or stand mount help please
Actually ATC does not offer anything active near your target 1K price.  Passives are not far above this area used.
Best standmounts with a 7" woofer/driver
If I am the importer and obviously biased, can I mention the ATC SCM20 active or passive should be on your "7 inch driver" list?  It's a true stand mount.  ATC does not use a transmission line or port to boost bass with the cabinet on the SCM20-it...
Am I wasting money on the theory of Bi-amping?
I guess since in this forum people want to call the bi wiring or some variation of that "biamping", we should at least call it "passive biamping" as per Elliots post. . BIamping - as taught in every audio book ever- is a term (like triamping) from...
Speaker stand project
Speakers near the floor have a +3dB bass boost- against two boundaries = + 6dB, three boundaries = +9dB bass boost. So be aware that a speaker’s low end will be different (in any room) depending on how close to boundaries the speakers are placed, ...
Biwiring make any sense?
Bi Wiring should make no difference unless you use undersized wire (as @carlsbad2 said) .  If it does, then something else is going on to give that effect.   The two "bi wire" signals are actually full range signals coming from the full range ampl...
Do different speaker stands can really make a big sound improvement?
I really REALLY didn’t want speaker stands to make a difference. I am in the business of demoing speakers for studios and such so I need to know as studios (like users at home) use all kinds of crazy things to put speakers on. Cardboard boxes, woo...
Least expensive plug-in power conditioner that works
No disrespect meant to you, but this is exactly what I was talking about- tremendous amount of disinformation in this product category from manufacturers and their marketing departments (or lack thereof).  A power conditioner needs a big transform...
Least expensive plug-in power conditioner that works
@mashif  That model Tripp Lite is not a power conditioner.
Active vs passive crossover
@koestner  I don't think having the same amps in an active multiway is a bad idea at all.  It's usually avoided due to cost but there is a big advantage: sonics: all the amps present exactly the same "sound" or character to all drivers.  This rem...
Can a power amp have too much power, risking damage to a speaker?
@phillyb From the number of damaged speakers we get in for service, I dont think your idea works in practice. And Im lost when you say "know when a recording comes into its own at a particualr power level". I assume you mean that you should be ab...
Can a power amp have too much power, risking damage to a speaker?
A general rule of thumb we see in service of loudspeakers  too much power sent to a speaker cooks woofers (from being too loud, beyond the dynamics of the speaker) underpowered usually cooks tweeters as the amp runs out of power and begins clipp...
Least expensive plug-in power conditioner that works
This is a very confusing area of product and Ive been involved with a few manufacturers who build things like this.  What I have learned is that the description "power conditioners" is used for a very wide mix of different products that do differe...
Active Speakers Don't Sound Better
Im not with you on this one erik.... The phase issue alone is sufficient to make active vs passive and no brainer.  If you are using the speakers at higher level, say mixing/mastering, then the heat issue in the driver changing the load the cross...
