LOOKING TO MAKE A TURNTABLE CHANGE, HOPEFULLY AN IMPROVEMENT
My experience is that if you want great sound from LP's, you have to drop some serious cash to get there.I started with the Rega Rp6 with the Exact 2 cartridge, Pass Labs XP15 phonostage (Solid State) and Conrad Johnson ET5 preamp (tube) and Conra...
Impressive Audiogon, Great Job!
Folks,I am one of the customer's who really disliked the changes that Audiogon made to the website.  I e-mailed Tammy and within a couple of days, the "search by price" function within a brand was fixed, and they were very gracious about my commen...
Auditioned Magico A3 - VERY DARK...
I listened to the Magico S5's  and after about 2 minutes, I asked the salesperson "where's the bass?"  So, everybody hears things differently.I also listened to the Audio Physic Avantera + and they were even more lacking in bass, in spite of their...
CDs Vs LPs
I like vinyl; just sounds better to me.  I have about 400 CD's and about 250 LP's, some of which are duplicates.  When I want the best sound, I always go for the LP.  If I am sleepy, though, as others have mentioned, I  go for the CD.I don't have ...
What phono pre am I looking for?
I have tube amps and preamp, and they match perfectly with the Pass Labs XP15, which is being replaced by the XP-17.  Both are solid state-- I have the idea that tubes everywhere can get you to a place of too much of a good thing, so adding this s...
How many of us really suffer from AUDIOPHILIA NERVOSA
I like it; a DSM code for chronic upgrade-itis.I just finished listening to the Soundtrack from Annie, followed by some Adele, and then Everlast (The Life Acoustic) to balance things out.  I listened to Rickie Lee Jones the other night. There are b...
High End is Dead?
I am fine with the question "Is high end dead?"  I don't think the poster is picking a fight, but is making a point with his question. For me, this is the time of building my nice system.  But, it took me until I was 55 before I could afford to do ...
Getting the cartridge weight setting right... Rega RP10
I have the RP10 on a 3/4 birch plywood shelf that's about 24" x 40" and is glued and mitered into the rear and both sides of the component rack.  It's pretty solid, but I have some thick rock maple stock around and may elevate the table by a coupl...
Audio valuations
The only thing that keeps an item from selling in any economy is that the price is too high for the market conditions.  That could be from too few buyers, an off brand, an item on the back-side of its life span or that it's a  buggy whip for sale....
Just Got My Oppo 205!
Well, I have my Oppo 105D with the Modwright upgrades and it's among the best sounding CD players I have heard.  Of course, most of what I have heard costs under $6,000.  But, in that range, with the Modwright upgrades, it blows away all the CD pl...
Preamp under $2,000 used
I forgot to mention that the ET3-SE from Conrad Johnson operates with a single 6922 tube.  I rolled the tubes at about 50 hours and have not changed them since.  I was worried about changing tubes and the expense, but we are going on 2 years of he...
Preamp under $2,000 used
Conrad Johnson ET3-SE.  With the Telefunken 6922 tube, I think it comes close to the ET5 in my A system.  It's a really nice tube preamp. No affiliation, none for sale; just love the sound, quality and value of CJ products.
Phono stage
Here's another vote for the Pass Labs XP15, although it's discontinued now-- replaced by the XP17.  Mark at Reno Hifi is the best of the bunch as far as I am concerned; responsive, delightful, competitively priced, ships quickly and checks to make...
Theres a firesale of the Modwrights oppo 105 units
I bought an Oppo 105D with the ModWright modifications.  Got it used for $1,800, right here on Audiogon.  It sounds far better than any other CD player I have ever had... or heard in an audio showroom.  Not the same detail or soundstage as my RP10...
Have you moved from tubed amplification to solid state amplification... Why?
I swore I would never own tubes because of the "hassle and expense."  Well, I graduated from Adcom GFA555 II's to a Conrad Johnson MF2550 SE, which sounded great (along with my CJ ET5 preamp).  Then I took a chance on a used pair of CJ monoblocks ...
