Whats wrong
Dear Needle, In your initiating post, you said that the system "sounds like" the tt is playing "slow". At that point, PBN and others offered a possible fix for that problem with your particular tt. But in this last post, you say that you checked t...
Turntable issue
1. Both speakers or one of the two?2. I doubt this is purely a grounding problem, although the hum problem might be separately related to grounding. Again, is the hum in both speakers or only one? And is it really "hum", defined as 60Hz or 120Hz t...
Technics SP-10 Tonearm Pod instead of Plinth/Base
What type of plywood? That makes a huge difference. For example, Baltic Birch plywood is a proven good material for tt plinths, but in general such BB plinths have been massive, for idlers and DD tt's, to achieve best results.
MC cartridges new vs. old
Just reading this thread. Frogman, does an EAR 834P provide adequate gain for the Spectral MCR? I rather thought the EAR was an MM-only phono stage with which you would use a SUT, to boost gain of an LOMC cartridge. If so, of course SUT plays a bi...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Halcro, You wrote, "The ICs were more difficult as many of the test figures in the Victor Service Manual didn't make sense or were simply wrong." Are you referring to the DC voltages on the pins of the ICs? I ask, because I measured some of the vo...
cartiage for Kenwood L07D genuine tone arm
"To clear up some misconceptions, if you increase the weight of the counterweight and bring it closer to the pivot, eff mass will decrease with the change of distance."That's only because eff mass will vary as the SQUARE of the distance between pi...

Banquo, Between me and Bill Thalmann, I daresay about 70% of the solder joints on my TT101 have been re-done. And the ones that have not been re-done are OK by inspection, not that that means they actually are OK. Every time I fiddle with the TT10...
Nude Turntable Project
I bought my TT101 as part of a "QL10", with plinth and tonearm. I usually find that I hate hate hate the sound of plinths made with MDF, and since the QL10 seems to have a layer of MDF, I took some steps to CLD it by (1) replacing the MDF-ish tone...
cartiage for Kenwood L07D genuine tone arm
With all due respect to Johnny, and as Dave partly indicated, Johnny's response to the question about effective mass is incorrect on all counts. The effective mass is a function of the distribution of the mass of the tonearm from pivot to headshel...
Nude Turntable Project
Henry, At the risk of beating a dead horse and mixing metaphors (because the horse has left the barn), have you ever seen the finish on the Saskia and other turntables made and sold by Mosin (Win Tinnon)? He (and OMA, as well) obtain a beautiful s...
Experiences buying used cartridges
Five or more years ago, I would have come down heavily against buying a used cartridge. About that time, I got interested in vintage MM and MI cartridges, thanks to "the thread". At that point, I started buying used and NOS vintage cartridges with...
Nude Turntable Project
Hi Henry, Did you consider slate, or is it difficult to source slate in Oz? I suppose bronze is even denser than slate, but I think slate competes with granite, for density. This is not to say that I have any way of knowing whether slate is better...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I've been using an Acutex LPM320STRIII (heretofore to be known only as "LPM320") for quite some time now on my Lenco with Dynavector DV505 tonearm. The Acutex alternates with a still original Grace Ruby. At first, the Grace had the edge, but latel...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Thanks, Halcro and Banquo. To answer Halcro, the symptom is as follows and as I described it before, except now that it is constant, I can make more complete observations: The tt starts up fine. The tach will show it ramp up to the 33.33 display, ...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Forgot to ask: I have reached the end of my rope with the TT101. In my efforts to fix it, I have achieved one thing; the fault is now constant, not intermittent. The good news is that this may make it easier for a really good tech to diagnose the ...
