High End System Building. How important is the matching, cabling and room? Thoughts ?
@benanders, @mahgister, @gregm, All good advice and argument. To bolster my above comments regardless of the insistence of the OP to the contrary I firmly stand behind the premise that a lower budget system in a properly treated room and wit...
High End System Building. How important is the matching, cabling and room? Thoughts ?
@gregm  with all due respect, the speakers-room interaction is a practical reality, scientifically proven - it is not a belief or "school of thought I fully agree with your good post.   @calvinj,  I disagree with your dubious stance which ap...
Musical subwoofer under $2000
@gdnrbob, yes Richard Vandersteen's rather unique practice of using a woofer below it's natural resonance frequency works extremely well. I have not seen mention of anyone else using this approach. High passing the main speakers makes so much sen...
Musical subwoofer under $2000
@highend64, thanks for the heads up on Rational Acoustics. I was not aware of this and will be looking into it. I use mostly Omnimic V2 available from Parts Express.
Musical subwoofer under $2000
@gotvinyl, thanks for the compliment. Yes Duke's Swarm or Debra are great and great value. However although the multi-sub approach is amazing I find that the lower frequencies in some rooms take too long to decay and some help from bass traps help...
Why "bookshelf" sspeakers?
I have mentioned before that so called full range speakers really are not! The salesman claims:  "Sir with these full rangers you will never need subs" This is, in it's most innocent form, a misunderstanding or ignorance but probably a simple lie...
Will audio gear be ok in unheated house
I think the humidity is more damaging than cold. I moved into a stone cottage in rural Limerick, Ireland, and have lost a few pieces of kit. Humidity here averages 75% minimum sometimes reaching into the 90%. Stored for a long time the power caps ...
Musical subwoofer under $2000
@sparksgja, I lost somehow a long post when I clicked on 'review' I'll keep it shorter and try again. On page 1 two links were provided: one by @ditusa and one by @audiorusty and I strongly encourage you to read them. The contents will clear up ...
Table,cartridge,phono...where to put most of my money?
@missioncoonery, I see nobody has directly answered your question. Spend most of your budget on the table. Then buy a good arm and lastly the cartridge. Why so much money on the table?  OK consider this: lets find hypothetically a vinyl record...
Opinions about Daniel Hertz
From reading comments here I would not go anywhere near Levinson stuff.  Well let me tell you put-downers and haters that I own an ML23.5 and it is a great amp, really great. There is no bling, no 'show' just a plain looking form follows function ...
Basic question about sensitivity
@ditusa, Hi Mike, bet those JBLs can crank. Pink Floyd don't play through no stinkin dome tweeters.
Basic question about sensitivity
@immatthewj, What makes a speaker ’hard to drive’ is when the impedance swings wildly from nominal. If the impedance curve does not dip much below 4 ohms you should not have a problem, just hook them up to the 4 ohm transformer tap. Sensitivity ...

Big speakers, are they really the best way to get great sound?
@phusis , Hi, yes the Synergy Horns, never heard the real thing but a friend and I roughly assembled out of stiff cardboard a mock up and we were both seriously impressed. Way back I got a DIY design out of either Speaker Builder magazine or Soun...
Big speakers, are they really the best way to get great sound?
@phusis, your horns look impressive and I'm sure sound the same. This format is rare to see these days and probably intentionally overlooked because of their appearance and also because no retailer would be prepared to stock non-sellers. Pity. I'v...
