Power output of tube amps compared to solid states Arthur,I just switched from a Class-B (push-pull) tube amp to a Class-A (single-ended) tube amp. My speakers are Rogers Studio 7s (90dbW sensitivity). Your understanding of the physics of Class-A and Class-B are far beyond mine, but here are my su...
Tube integrated amp recommendations? Just got the March 2010 issue of Stereophile in the mail. The issue includes a review of the Dynaudio Excite X12. Let me start by saying that the speaker's published measurements are superb (as per usual with Dynaudio) but they do reveal some sign...
Tube integrated amp recommendations? I don't think the more modern genres sound awful with my set-up but it's certainly not the last word in speed, treble extension, and transient snap...for that you might need different speakers and/or a different (kind of) amp (I am thinking a Foca...
Tube integrated amp recommendations? I have matched a Dynaudio Focus 140 with a Primaluna Prologue One. I like the combination. It's a romantic, sweet (slightly sepia-tinted) combination that still has enough detail to satisfy (me). That's the type of sound I like.
Tube integrated amp recommendations? Tube amps are normally chosen for a "romantic" high end i.e. smooth and melifluous. The Jolida hybrids also have that type of sound. I am not sure if you will find a tube amp bright enough for your tastes. Have you considered a solid state amp? Th...
How are Mullards supposed to sound? Incredible as it seems...replacing the (NOS)12AT7's with 12AU7's made no difference at all.I have changed all the pre-amp tubes back to the EH tubes that I had before I decided to "upgrade." So, I must therefore conclude that I don't like the soun...
How are Mullards supposed to sound? Update:Thanks everyone. Thanks to your comments, I now realize that I goofed. I ordered NOS Mullard 12AT7s rather than 12AU7s. That could explain the weird sound. When I get home this evening I will replace the 12AT7s with 12AU7s and see how that ...
How are Mullards supposed to sound? Thanks for the responses everyone.Just to clarify...I changed all the tubes to Mullards. The El-34's and 12AX-7's are the new Svetlana Mullard reissues and the 12AT7s are NOS.I suspect (though I could be wrong) that it's the NOS tubes that are not ...
B&W and deteriorating Kevlar drivers Aramid fibers such as kevlar degrade in ultraviolet light, so sunlight may be the culprit.
B&W and deteriorating Kevlar drivers I have experienced this. The aramid fibers (kevlar) in the main drivers do appear to "age" over time. They change color and I also noticed the "papery" coloration in the upper mid-range gradually become more pronounced over an 11 year period.

Best SACD Player in the $2000 Range Is Sony going to use the Blu-ray disc (rather than the SACD disc) for new DSD recordings? Is this DSD-music on a Blu-ray disc? or is Sony incorporating SACD playback on all their Blu-ray players? In one scenario they replace SACD and in the other t...
Best speaker used under $1000 for piano rec. I will second the Dynaudio recommendation...the model Focus 140 is also excellent with piano. I will also add several BBC type monitors such as the Harbeth Compact 7, Harbeth Monitor 30, Rogers LS 3/5A, and Spendor SA1.
B&W CDM 1 SE or CDM 1 NT The CDM1 1 NT sounded flat, mechanical and unmusical to me, while the CDM1 SE sounded balanced, acccurate, neutral and intensely musical. I would go with the SE model.
Speakers in 10-15K price range for Classical music Forgot to mention that the Dynaudios (with the right amp) can be convincing. They have the ability to recreate realistic instrumental timbre but need the finest sources (the best digital or analog sources) to achieve this. I prefer the newer model... |
