Monitor Audio for classical music
Monitor Audio speakers use metal dome tweeters and metal cone woofers which in my experience don't self damp well enough to be true to (classical) instrumental timbres. Put another way...the drivers ring (like bells) and color the sound in unaccep...
How do I smooth out violins?
I find this whole discussion fascinating. I think many good points have been raised (by many posters).I never find live strings harsh sounding even if I sit onstage with the players, so in my opinion the problem lies with the playback system and t...
30 Years of Perfect Sound?
Reading over the rest of this man's site as pertains to audio I find a lot of contradictions and misinformation. I would take his opinions with a grain of salt.
30 Years of Perfect Sound?
The only part of the article that I really take exception with is that on SACD. From the moment that I auditioned the product upon its initial release in 1999, I have always found it to sound extremely good and much, much closer to live music than...
Sonus Faber - New Concertino vs Old Concerto?
The older models sounded a lot better than the later models.Comparing the older model Concertino to the older model Concerto...the Concerto was a little bigger and fuller sounding...it had more bass than the Concertino...but I think the Concertino...
Peachtree Nova or Jolida Hybrid Integrated
I own the Jolida 1501 hybrid and I don't think it would have any problem driving your Arro speakers. The amps puts out 100 watts into 8-ohms and twice that into 4-ohms. It does have an open, warm and sparkling sound quality. The amp sounds vivid, ...
Harbeth compact 7 ES3 for a large room ?
Good choice for a large room. You will gain dynamics and slightly deeper bass response.
British sound???
The British sound is linked to the BBC and the need for speech monitoring. Think speech...the spoken word...British, or "received" enunciation. Loudspeakers are voiced to flatter the speaking voice. To foreign ears, such speakers can sound "polite,...
Int. amp for Dynaudio Focus 140 speakers
I use the Focus 140s with a Primaluna Prologue 1 and combination sounds beautiful, fun, lively, fast and romantic.I consider the speakers super neutral so they will reveal the character of the amp with which they are paired.
what is honey colored? examples?
My guess is that it's the low order harmonics of (most) tube amps (rather than any roll-off per se) that give them that golden, velvety, sepia-tinted glow. (Most) solid state amps exhibit the opposite, nasty grating sound of high order harmonics, ...
Transmission Line
The t-line is a resonating pipe and the danger is that harmonics of the pipes' fundamental resonance might escape (the line) and color the sound of the speaker system. In practice, t-lines usually behave identically to reflex ports, but involve gr...
Experienced audiophiles best speaker
I have heard the Spendors and Dynaudios but not the Harbeths...yet I wonder if your description of analysis and dryness comes from their use of metal dome tweeters (in most models).Metal domes (in any speaker or application) sound analytical and d...
Old Rotel RCD971 vs. Marantz cd5003
"All i know is I would rather have a bright, bouncy room that i have to tone down instead of a dead room that i have to liven up."I agree and nothing deadens a room like synthetic carpet.Maybe the Rotel sounds different from system to system and r...
Old Rotel RCD971 vs. Marantz cd5003
The Rotel does not sound dry/sterile sounding in my place (hardwood floors with wool rugs) so I think it's your room.Synthetic carpet dries out and ruins good sound. I think that may be the biggest problem. Replacing it with hardwood works wonders...
Old Rotel RCD971 vs. Marantz cd5003
I own both the Rotel RCD971 and the Marantz SA8003 and I think you would have to pick a Marantz player at this level or higher (the higher end players being designed by Ken Ishiwata) to see any improvement over the Rotel RCD971.The Rotel still sou...
