Pleasantly Surprised
Your responses takes me back to around 20 years ago. At that time I totally discounted tube gear (and cats). I believe differently today! I've rediscovered classical music via vinyl and tubes. Your DIY project(s) intrigue me; I wish I had the tale...

How are you doing Barroter? I'm not sure these comments are what you anticipated with your initial post. I'd like to hear more from your perspective as you seem to be a true hobbyist; you actually seem to be a maker, which in this realm I'm not.

My most satisfying NOS upgrade yet has been a quad of RCA EL 84s replacing the current production EH variety. I'm still trying to decide between an NOS RCA 12AX7A vs. a current Chinese tube used by Cary. Regarding larger power tubes, the current p...

I must add, I'm talking about high quality and appropriate NOS replacements, and not necessarily the best or most expensive.

Many years ago I changed from Carver solid state to B&K solid state and was overjoyed. I can vividly relate to that memory. Many years later, I was equally astounded by the difference between NOS and current production vacuum tubes. I don't cl...
New production EL84/6BQ5 tubes?
I've put about 15 hours on a matched quad of NOS RCAs from the early '60s in my Jolida 102b driving Totem Model One Signatures; absolutely wonderful and no comparison to the stock EH EL84s. In conjunction with NOS RCA 12AT7 input tubes and an upgr...
Good Monitors for no more than 150?
There might still be a pair of Celestion 7s on Audiogon for $150. I believe they have an 8'' woofer and might be a little too big. However, I really liked my Celestion 3s and 5s. I don't know if the 7s are as tuneful in the bass. I'd risk it for $...
Budget minded bookshelves
I just saw a pair of Celestion 8s on Audiogon for $200. In the past I've owned the 3s and the 5s for second systems and been very happy. I've not heard the 8s, but at the price, you've got little to lose. My mother still uses my old 3s. They sound...
Can You Live With Crackling & Popping Noise?
Even with proper cleaning, some records are still unsatisfactory. Get rid of them and buy more. They're still relatively cheap and available. In my opinion, when they're right, nothing's better.
Jolida 1501RC with 6 or 4 ohm speaker...
I'm discovering how very good Jolida is. As with all brands, it seems that some pieces are better than others. Often, the less pretentious the better.
Jolida 1501RC with 6 or 4 ohm speaker...
I've had no problems driving 4 ohm Totem speakers with a Jolida 1301 (30 wpc). I think you'll be fine if the speakers don't drop much below 4 ohms. I listen at low to moderate levels.
Are the B&W 700 series sterilized of late?
Elizabeth, that's so nice of you. Civility is good.
Jolida 202a versus Antique Sound Labs Typhoon
I think you'd be fine with Jolida. I just purchased a small Jolida tube integrated for my bedroom system (JD102B). It's really quite nice sounding. Jolida's been around ten or more years and has a pretty good track record of safety and quality con...
Who has dumped the power conditioner?
Wow! How's the music?
Jolida 202a versus Antique Sound Labs Typhoon
Jolida most likely won't blow up. Just kidding...sort of.
