Basis Vector cartridge recommendations Wee,A friend has the Winfeld and it is a very good cartridge. I have only briefly heard a setup with the A95 and it ,too, sounded good. I would bet that there is not much difference between the two. The minimal body, and use of titanium frame f...
Capital Audio Fest 2016 Jond,I agree that the smaller Voxactiv sounded particularly good; the big system was bright, but, if you sat WAY back they were quite good and not so bright. The big horns need to be in a big room that allows one to be quite far away from the spe...
Capital Audio Fest 2016 Salectric,The Deja Vu speaker IS an open baffle speaker. The back, which looks solid, allows sound to pass with some damping of higher frequencies. I thought it was solid also, but, I got that explanation from Vu. I did not know that the horn i...
Capital Audio Fest 2016 I had a good time at the show, although I really did not see anything "new" that piqued my interest. Overall, most of the rooms delivered decent sound, which is unlike many shows where some rooms sound truly awful. I think this is probably the c...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s? Yes and no. It would be very difficult to find whole speaker systems, and even modern speakers using vintage drivers, that would make compact monitors that sound as good as modern monitor speakers. The same probably holds true for thin column-ty...
American Made Audio Unveils New Site For Made in USA Components I noticed that Krell and Balabo (Bridge Audio Laboratories) are on the list. Aren't at least some of Krell gear made in China and isn't Balabo gear designed and manufactured in Japan?
NHT crossover badly damaged, what caused this?? Heat damage for crossovers suggests that a lot of power had been sent through the speakers for a sustained period. It takes more than a few seconds of high power to get a speaker that hot. I am amazed that the drivers survived, but, then again I...
Is there a way to improve the sound? The NDS/Uniti employs its own software that allows for pretty comprehensive use of metadata with the WAV files; aside from requiring much more storage capability, there is no disadvantage to using WAV files with the NDS. The original poster menti...
Is there a way to improve the sound? The NDS works much better with files ripped and stored as WAV files. I heard a comparison of WAV and FLAC ripped from the same CD and the WAV files actually sounded a little bit better. NAIM's dedicated ripper, the Uniti, rips to WAV.
Symposium Ulta Shelf under floor standing speakers - Any Thoughts ? The Ultras will certainly deliver a lot of vibration absorption (dissipation of energy as heat), but, you should at least experiment with the effects of raising your speaker that much higher off the floor. If you cannot borrow a pair of Ultras, y...
Proac Studio 100 - will 35 wpc be enough? I am a bit surprised that there are no posts by those who insist that they get better sound running their 104 db/w speakers with something like 200 watt amps instead of whimpy 100 watt amps. Most of the amps I like are lower-powered so I agree wit...
Symposium Ulta Shelf under floor standing speakers - Any Thoughts ? I use svelte shelves under my speakers, which are thinner than ultras, and I have ultras under my amp and DAC /music server. Like any tuning device, whether it helps or hurts the sound quality is dependent on the room/system and what you are tryi...
( Vinyl) Your latest purchase and where? My latest purchases have been new records from a Washington DC establishment called Hill and Dale Records. They sell only new stuff and what they sell is well curated--new releases that aren't horrible pap, and old reissues from artists worthy of...
Where are the Western Electric 124 for sale in the USA? Besharp,Whichever way you go, you have a very valuable amp. When properly reconditioned, it is one of the best sounding amps you can buy, provided you don't need much power. I spite of being mostly used in commercial setups, hence heavily used, ...
Where are the Western Electric 124 for sale in the USA? You should contact Deja Vu Audio (dejavu-audio.com). They recondition/re-build 124s, 133s and other vintage amps, and make modified versions of such, utilizing a lot of vintage parts. These are custom amps that can be made with different gain st... |
