NHT crossover badly damaged, what caused this??
Heat damage for crossovers suggests that a lot of power had been sent through the speakers for a sustained period.  It takes more than a few seconds of high power to get a speaker that hot.  I am amazed that the drivers survived, but, then again I...
Is there a way to improve the sound?
The NDS/Uniti employs its own software that allows for pretty comprehensive use of metadata with the WAV files; aside from requiring much more storage capability, there is no disadvantage to using WAV files with the NDS.  The original poster menti...
Is there a way to improve the sound?
The NDS works much better with files ripped and stored as WAV files.  I heard a comparison of WAV and FLAC ripped from the same CD and the WAV files actually sounded a little bit better.  NAIM's dedicated ripper, the Uniti, rips to WAV.
Symposium Ulta Shelf under floor standing speakers - Any Thoughts ?
The Ultras will certainly deliver a lot of vibration absorption (dissipation of energy as heat), but, you should at least experiment with the effects of raising your speaker that much higher off the floor.  If you cannot borrow a pair of Ultras, y...
Proac Studio 100 - will 35 wpc be enough?
I am a bit surprised that there are no posts by those who insist that they get better sound running their 104 db/w speakers with something like 200 watt amps instead of whimpy 100 watt amps. Most of the amps I like are lower-powered so I agree wit...
Symposium Ulta Shelf under floor standing speakers - Any Thoughts ?
I use svelte shelves under my speakers, which are thinner than ultras, and I have ultras under my amp and DAC /music server.  Like any tuning device, whether it helps or hurts the sound quality is dependent on the room/system and what you are tryi...
( Vinyl) Your latest purchase and where?
My latest purchases have been new records from a Washington DC establishment called Hill and Dale Records.  They sell only new stuff and what they sell is well curated--new releases that aren't horrible pap, and old reissues from artists worthy of...
Where are the Western Electric 124 for sale in the USA?
Besharp,Whichever way you go, you have a very valuable amp.  When properly reconditioned, it is one of the best sounding amps you can buy, provided you don't need much power.  I spite of being mostly used in commercial setups, hence heavily used, ...
Where are the Western Electric 124 for sale in the USA?
You should contact Deja Vu Audio (dejavu-audio.com).  They recondition/re-build 124s, 133s and other vintage amps, and make modified versions of such, utilizing a lot of vintage parts.  These are custom amps that can be made with different gain st...
Reference DACS: An overall perspective
Sunandmusic,I got to participate in a blind shootout between a 3.1, 4.1 and a 5 Special.  I have also heard the DAC-5 Signature in a friend's system.   These are all very musical sounding devices.  In the shootout, I thought the 4.1 was really the...
Wavac LCR-X2...is it worth $10k ?
Pani,I like tube gear myself.  The better examples, to me, are very dynamic and fast sounding, and are particularly good at getting subtle differences in dynamic changes; they don't "fake" dynamics or speed by having an artificially hard "edge" to...
New Reel to Reel machines!
I have seen those pictures before and one thing bothers me.  If you look at an enlargement of those photos, the controls for the machine suggest that it is a playback-only machine (no record button, no controls for input or output volume, etc).  W...
Sonus Faber Guarneri - will any aiddtional isolation be beneficial?
Chayro,I completely agree.  As with any sort of "tuning" whether the result is positive or negative is dependent on a whole lot of factors that make it impossible to predict the outcome.  That is why I recommended some kind of cheap and rough expe...
Sonus Faber Guarneri - will any aiddtional isolation be beneficial?
Hi Folkfreak,Thanks for your response.I have a pair of SAP J2001 speakers, although I have switched out its midrange horn in favor of very old Western Electric 731 b driver and a Western Electric KS 12025 horn.  The bass cabinet should barely fit ...
Sonus Faber Guarneri - will any aiddtional isolation be beneficial?
Hi Folkfreak,I am looking at upping my isolation game by using something like the Townsend Podium or Corners in place of the Svelte Shelf I currently use.  I would need the largest Podium (24" wide), and even that would not have the full depth of ...
