Audio & the Emperor’s new clothes. I agree that not many indulge in expensive gear to impress others - people who aren't into it think you're crazy for how much you spent and a lot of people who are into it think you're crazy for picking what you picked. Just check out a large numb...
AV preamp How much are you looking to spend and are you willing to shop used? Full retail, there are several very well reviewed units in the $3K range, with high end units going for around $6K. Also - how much is the system used for HT vs. music?
Are there more tirekickers now vs. then? I agree - a marked increase in cryptic emails asking if something is still available or will you take a very low price or both. I also agree with the viewpoint that this is probably just part of the environment, and you just have to be efficient a...
Do CD-R's sound the same as originals Leolewis7 - any insight as to why that is? We're 140+ posts into this topic and a whole bunch of people have said that they absolutely sound differently, but I haven't seen any real theory put on the table as to why this would be the case and I'm ...
Why do digital cables sound different? It is asynchronous, and it's fixed rate. In a "normal" setup, sender and receiver each have their own clocks that are supposed to work identically. I've never studied the CD interface, so somebody who has can correct me if I mis-state something, b...
Why do digital cables sound different? I'm still missing something, but I've been known to be dense before - my take on timing errors would be that they cause bits to be misinterpreted - since sender and receiver have subtly different experiences with their independent clocking mechani...
Why do digital cables sound different? Blues_man - Given the inadequacies of the CD protocol and your experience in the area of digital audio data transfer interfaces, what are the benefits brought to the environment by using a high-end digital interconnect over a basic, well-built dig...
Best reviewers I like Michael Fremer's reviews for the most part - he's not as mechanical as many of the reviewers. That said, everything finishes up with "this is my new favorite...", so you have to read between the lines a bit. Anthony Cordesman has done a ser...
DO AUDIOPHILES EVER LISTEN TO MUSIC? I second the notion on the beer, though 2-3 is more my range. In addition, I'd buy a decent CD changer, make CDRs (or not) of 300 of your favorite CDs, put it on random play and enjoy - guaranteed to bring a smile to your face every 5 minutes or s...
Why do digital cables sound different? Why is it that when refuting the argument that there is no technical reason for a digital cable to impart a sonic difference, those who hear a difference resort to the, "well, your system must not be resolving enough and/or your hearing not good e...
Do CD-R's sound the same as originals Tubegroover - I'm quite certain that many people have experienced making "copies" that were so different that the differences could be heard by anyone - it's easy to do even with very recent software and hardware. Just configure your "ripping" sof...
Which Speaker in the 4-6K Range? If you really want the Hales T8 and are willing to buy used, you should have no problem finding a pair in your price range. With Hales closing shop, the prices are better than ever.
Why do digital cables sound different? Redkiwi - you're right that having time synchonization requirements makes the environment more demanding. However, as long as you have 1) a redundancy scheme and 2) sufficient resources above and beyond the demands of the basic application to supp...
Why do digital cables sound different? 1439 - I agree with your point 100% and have made it myself many times - if differences are heard using different cables, the bits must be being altered (a bad thing)and if they are, then we as consumers should be demanding a better technology for...
Good entry level transport? Without a doubt a tough value to beat - you'd be getting an excellent CD transport just as part of the deal. I don't know if that player will pass a 24/96 signal, though, which would be a modest, but real, concern in my book. |
