Rock? money down the drain?
Flip - couldn't agree more. I enjoy going to the All-Music Guide website (www.allmusic.com) and traversing their extensive "genre" trees - it makes your head spin there are so many. I'm glad there isn't a test! I'd go one step further and say that...
Best speaker for rock music
The Dynaudio Contour 1.1 - about $1K used, fairly small monitor, awesome sound with remarkable low end considering their size. I have them in my office and the Contour 3.0's in my main system with is both music and HT. Only drawback is they defini...

Trejla - I live in St. Louis. The Hip probably have come through here several times, and I will check out their website so I don't miss them again. I, like so many others, took a 10 year hiatus from getting out while kids were young and career was...
monitor speaker for near-wall placement?
The Linn monitor speakers are specifically designed to be positioned close to the wall. I don't have much experience with most of their models, but had a pair of KanII's for a while and loved them
Rock? money down the drain?
Flip - did you miss the title of this thread? Although the definition of "rock" wasn't clearly stated, Merle, Burt and (for sure) all of classical don't fall under anyone's definition of rock. Metallica has been mentioned a bunch of times.
Need some advice with new system
You say you're on a budget but not how much you want to spend, so I apologize if I miss the mark. You could look for a used pair of NHT's for speakers - the 2.5i can be had for about $700, the 2.9's for about $1200. They're made to be within a few...

Mes - I'd really like to see Tragically Hip live. I haven't seen any sign of them touring in the last couple years, though with their recent release they may be out doing so now. Some of their stuff strikes me the same way as the Rainmakers - don'...
Rock? money down the drain?
Both - I think you reach the "knee in the curve" of price vs. performance earlier with rock music than other genres, but that knee is still past $10K (retail) for a single source two-channel system that is used primarily for rock. Two excellent po...
CD-R's vs. CD-RW's
Grumpybb - what sound card are you using? For some reason the SB series (not exactly high-end) will only output 48K which obviously implies a conversion going on. I've hesitated to buy a high-end sound card for $400 or so because you're paying a l...
1955-2001 Favorite Top Ten Rock Groups
Shubertmaniac - I like the Isley's variety, at any given time and over the course of their career. Everything from sexy love songs to seriously jammin' electric guitar. They recently released a 3-CD compilation that works chronologically through t...
1955-2001 Favorite Top Ten Rock Groups
Genesis, Talking Heads, Isley Brothers, Dream Theater, The Tragically Hip (definitely second that one), Joe Satriani, Counting Crows, Jane's Addiction, Tool and (of course) the Beatles :-)
DVD player w/ decoding, or go external?
I'm unaware of any DVD player w/ decoding and a volume control, so there's no way to control the volume even if you were to be able to get the connections worked out. There's no way to use it with your existing processor unless it has a six-analog...
The Beatles
Shubertmaniac - Actually, I agree that selling a jillion albums has nothing to do with their influence and, to a large extent, significance. I only brought it up since your line of reasoning seemed to be centered on measures of popularity. Who di...
The Beatles
Well, how many times do you hear a Beatles influence in current pop music - constantly. A CD of their 27 (!!) #1 hits that's selling in the Britney / NSync range. They still have a huge sales appeal and are extremely influential in music being pro...
Best Music Review Resource
The All-Music Guide site (www.allmusic.com) is a fabulous music reference - not exactly a review site per se, but lots and lots of information about music - bands, albums, genres, etc.
