Burned CDs can sound better than the original?
Blues_Man - that's really interesting - I've wanted to hear somebody's experience performing the tests you describe and would be interested in any more detail you might have. A similar test that would be interesting to perform would be somehow ana...
Recommend good satellite speakers?
The most recent issue of The Absolute Sound reviews / compares 6 reasonably priced pairs of speakers (in the $500-600 range). The most recent issue of Sound & Vision reviews another 6 in the $300 range. The most recent copy of Stereophile revi...
Best used 5 channels amp. for both music and movies
The last two posts are both excellent advice - which one is best depends on the rest of your system and tastes, and you might want to consider two amps - a better 2-channel coupled with a 3 or 5 channel amp. I currently have the KAV-500 and the KA...
Equipment Stand placement?
Thanks to all for your helpful replies. Bob - you're right - this has confirmed that experimentation is the order of the day. Currently, I don't have any choice as to placement, but soon I'm going to be able to free up one or the other side walls,...
New Transport Approach
I only envisioned this as a high-end application - hence, no need for portable players, etc., and an acceptance of the initial delay for the improved performance, since audiophiles are the type that are willing to go to these lengths. I'm not sure...
New Transport Approach
You can buy 256Mb RAM SIMMs for $140 or so apiece - since you'd need three, the maximum cost would be $420, but I'm sure the wholesale bulk cost would be decidedly less. At this point, it would be a definite cost addition to the machine, non-trivi...
Seek Integrated for 1000 dollars, new / used, suggestions?
I'd look into the Linn Majik - you can find them used for $500-600, new is $1095 (or $1195 with phone input). Extremely musical and compact. I had one in my office for a long time and loved it. It has a remote control and pre-amp outs for future a...
are we are own worst enemies?
Jazz_nut - that's the point, though - if a local dealer has a trade-in and is asking $6500 for that same amp, why would somebody buy it from an individual over the internet at the same price? There's a lot of things that can go wrong, which are of...
Burned CDs can sound better than the original?
I can make a provably bit-perfect copy from an XRCD with my computer-based CD copier, and I can make a provably bit-perfect copy of a CDR with same, so I'd be at a loss to explain why an XRCD sounds worse when a mainstream mastering sounds better....
Recommend me a good psychologist
A great article in this month's Stereophile on what to do if you're wondering how to spend $1000 on cables - The Fifth Mark. He suggests buying / learning the guitar, hiring a quartet to play in your parlor, etc. etc., all in the same vein in whic...
Burned CDs can sound better than the original?
I guess this is the opposite theory to the one that says CDRs sound worse for one of a variety of reasons. I've never been able to get any sort of engineering reasoning as to why either would be the case. Given that it's easy to show that you have...
are we are own worst enemies?
Assuming you get 10-20% off MSRP if you buy new from a dealer, buying used from an individual at 65-70% of MSRP could be saving you as little as 10-15%. Price has to be your overriding concern by a large margin to make this attractive - if I can b...
Help with NHT 3.3 s
NHT recommends placement of the speakers against the back wall, and a listener distance of 1.5x the distance between the two speakers. With the slanted baffles, this placement should work for almost any room, at least for the sweet spot, but is qu...
monitor w/ bass?
Assuming you're not going to actually put them on a bookshelf and are just looking for a small speaker, I'd recommend the Dynaudio Contour 1.1. You can get them for $1600 retail, about $900 used. You'll want a good 80-100 watts per channel, but th...
Amp for Dynaudio: Pass Aleph 3 is OK?
Just to be clear, I'm sure the Aleph 3 is a superb amp - I have heard nothing but positive remarks and reviews of Pass amps, and would love to try one in my system some day. I've never heard one under any circumstances, so I can't personally give ...
