Rap music on high-end speakers
Certainly there must be a lot of people on this thread who, upon reading their post in retrospect, think to themselves, "Geez, I sound more like my parents every day!"
Totally Confused about home theater
Psychicanimal - I'm not sure what your goals are, but I'd offer the following points:A major consideration is whether you're going to go with one system or two. I love both music and HT and space dictates one system, so my focus is on making a sys...
Which would you buy?
I'd buy the Muse (esp. if you can spring for the Signature version). The Sony probably (just a guess) has the better video playback, but with the way video is going, after your pocketbook recovers from buying the Muse, you could buy a $250 Sony DV...
Best speakers in 2k-3k price point
The current Listener magazine has a comparison review of 6 speakers around $3K retail - some interesting insights. Not reviewed in that article but one that I would suggest is the Dynaudio Contour 1.8 Mk II. -Kirk
PlayStation2 as budget DVD source: why/why not?
Only one first-person account, so take it with a grain of salt - a friend of mine used a PS2 as his DVD source for a while and had a lot of trouble with skipping DVD's. I finally convinced him to buy a decent Sony and all the same DVDs played flaw...
Next step up
I'd consider a Muse Model 9 - they can be had pretty cheap used now and sound fabulous on CD playback, as well as serving as a DVD player. -Kirk
Are you Guys Rich or What!?
I agree - stay away from the leading edge, read magazines from two years ago as though they're current, get all excited about what they're raving about and go buy it...used. Stay behind the curve and you'll have all the fun for a lot less money, m...
Average age of audiophiles
The peak of the bell curve on spending more than you probably should for most hobbies seems to be in the mid-30's through 40's age range - I'd guess that's the range for audiophiles as well. I'm sure there are lots of 20-somethings at any given sh...
Anybody willing to admit?
No - in fact, I'd have to admit to just the opposite, the inability to get rid of titles I don't like. I'm "only" approaching about 1000 CDs, so maybe it'll change as it becomes more obvious that there has to be titles I don't like / never listen ...
Anyone heard of this ? Possible "scam" ?
I agree - probably not a scam, just a box-pushing retailer. Given the bad advice you often get at this type of retailer, the parents should be glad the retailer isn't going to set them up. It can't hurt to wait 24 hours to turn it on, but that sou...
Speaker Help for 2000 to 3000
The latest Listener magazine reviews several speaker models for $3K retail, including some you wouldn't normally come across. Really good information. -Kirk
Is a deal a deal?
I agree that "offer+acceptance=deal", but that only holds between up-front dealing in good faith. "It's not a deal until the check clears" is the rule on the wild frontier.I love it when a deal goes well, start to finish, and most of mine have. I ...
Bit perfect copies
Richard - that's an interesting response. Thanks for sharing it with us. While the audio CDR components appear on the surface to be a really convenient way to make copies, I find it's at least as easy and considerably more flexible to make copies ...
Convert Me
I use the Lexicon MC-12 DACs fed by the 7700. One of my goals is to have the best sound I can get while keeping the system to as small a number of boxes (simple) as possible. -Kirk
Which cd/dv mega changer using an outboard DAC?
I've got 3 Sony ES's digital out through a DAC. Sounds great in the general case, and a whole lotta fun. I make copies of all my CDs and load them up with those, keeping the originals out for "serious" listening and the car changer. Highly recomme...
