Audiogon/Asylum and magazine reviewers posts
Excellent post Zaikesman - I think you really nailed it, that there are a lot of people on this site who are experienced enough with audio to be a reviewer, but that being a reviewer requires having the whole package, including writing skills, end...
Why upgrade transport???
The last thing I would spend a lot of money on right now is an expensive transport, unless the money's not that big a deal to you. If you really feel like your transport is limiting your playback potential, I'd go with a new all-in-one player. But...
Top This
I've always thought Talking Heads' "Once In A Lifetime" was good funeral music - "This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife! Man, how did I get here?" I could only do it if my wife was already gone, since she is a beautiful per...
What Rags carry the most review weight???
All audio rags should be read for enjoyment only. They're good for giving you an idea of the range of equipment out there, and some of the characteristics you might enjoy the most. If I was in the market for a new pair of nice speakers, I'd use th...
Replace DVD or add dedicated CD?
I'd look for a used Muse Model 9 - they go for ridiculously (IMO) low prices and are a DVD player that sounds fabulous on CDs. Reviews are fantastic, my personal experience has been fantastic - highly recommended. And it keeps the number of boxes ...
Which has a greater effect on music, int.amp or CD?
I agree with Sugarbrie - start with the amp. I'd be careful buying an amp before deciding on speakers, but if I had speakers and wanted to choose the next biggest factor, I'd focus on the amp. -Kirk
Considering the Rule of Diminishing Returns.......
I'm going to assume that you've listened to a lot of speakers and have decided on the Aerials because you really like the sound, and your only indecision is the $$$. I don't own Aerials, but I'm going to encourage you to buy what you love, and if ...
Receiver vs Processor
I'll throw my $.02 worth in for the DC-1 - for straight HT, they're really great. You won't get all the latest 6-channel modes, but you get the Logic7 mode and fabulous HT performance. I've had the DC-1, MC-1 and now the MC-12 - they're absolutely...
What about the ultimate home theater????
The most exotic system I saw was at a dealer in NYC - it had Wilson MAXX (don't know the exact model, but I think they were the better part of $100K) up front driven by the top-of-the line Mark Levinson monos (the 33's - gawd those things are huge...
Digital Front End.. help please
I'll throw my vote in for a Muse Model 9 Signature - they're going used within your price range. Wonderful. -Kirk
TAS's recommended speakers under 2500
The Road and Track matrices were what I was thinking of as well when I suggested a set of ratings for speakers - it's really easy to look at the R&T ratings and understand a lot more about the things that are most important. There hasn't been ...
When will the "Madness" stop
There is definitely a point (different for different people) where the cost of the next upgrade is sufficiently high as to buy a signficant amount of music. If you ever find yourself wondering why the Madness continues, find the willpower to turn ...
Best SPKR'S and cables for Krell Amps?
Dynaudios are a great match for the Krells, and FPB250 monos would give you the choice over Dyn's full range of offerings. I have the Contour 3.0's driven by the FPB200c, which is a very nice combination. The 3.0's would probably be the bottom end...
DVD-A Question
You could send a CD-quality, 2-channel digital stream to your Levinson, but that would not be the DVD-A you're paying for. If you search hard enough, you might find one that passes a 96Khz, 2-channel PCM digital signal which, presumably, the Levin...
TAS's recommended speakers under 2500
I understand why the mags do this, but I have to admit that I'm really tired of the whole concept of component ratings. I'd be a lot more interested if they rated them in a matrix, with a bunch of categories including build quality, visual appeal,...
