Need advice choosing a complimentary CD Player
MF player is a great choice. Didn't think you could find one within your budget or would have recommended for sure. Enjoy.
How to evaluate amps that are not broken in?
PS - I bought a late model amp used from a broker recently and I am not sure it was completely broken in... cause the sound changed over time. Or was just me? HA!
How to evaluate amps that are not broken in?
Stuartk,A thought.Given that there is general but not unanimous consensus among: A) manufacturers, B) retailers, and C) reviewers (who are professional and critical listeners of hi fi gear for many hours a week, week in and week out) that "break i...
My first REAL system...need some advice
Voodoochild,Glad you might find this information helpful. One correction, the price quoted above is for a new PrimaLuna ProLogue model one integrated with phono stage, not the model two as stated above. The model two has a little more power and the...

Agree with Bob R about the big NAD, obviously.

My first REAL system...need some advice
I am providing you with several viable systems within the price ranges you suggest ($2000 to $4000 USD total). My preference is to go for a balanced system with a quality source. The theory being you want to avoid garbage in, garbage out from the ...
Need advice choosing a complimentary CD Player
I haven't heard the modified Music Hall's but really like the stock version and have heard good things about the Underwood mods. The Cambridge is a very accurate and detailed player but also very smooth and "non-digital" sounding for this price cat...
Great -Small- Cheap subwoofer ?
I have a Klipsch RW 8 sub and really like it for the money. It is musical and fast, not thumpy or muddy at all. I think I paid $250 for it new from an Internet discounter a few years ago. It is very compact and goes down to about 32 Hz. Great for ...

Elvick has a great idea. You might also consider a Naim CD 5i or the Moon CD-1. Of all the models proposed above, I would suggest the Cambridge 840C.
Thoughts on Era Design 5 monitors??
I like the Era D5's but like the B&W CM1's a little better. Bass is clearer and deeper on the CM1's and the highs are slightly smoother and better defined. This comparison made with Rotel's new 500W/ch Class D amp and their entry level preamp....
Vandersteen 1c, and an integrated
Your list looks great. I would second the addition of PrimaLuna ProLogue I or II integrated tube amps. NAD 372 might be fun with all that juice.
How to explain our obsessions to the uninitiated?
Your summary statement is excellent and as good as necessary I think.Taking chadnliz's comment to a further extreme - you might just tell "Dad" that all the nerve endings that would have been in one part of your anatomy ended up in your brain atta...
Cables Are Crazy, what do you think?
Yes, give up. Why should he take time to validate your point when it is not important to HIM? Most engineers I know who are also audiophiles start out as skeptics, and only come around to the value of cables (if they ever do) when faced with the e...
Best used floorstanding / full range around $1000
I was going to mention two of Sonicbeauty's choices, the two Quads and the Polk LS 15. Love all three of these.I will contrast their faint praise of Totems by suggesting a used pair of Staffs as another brilliant budget tower and available used in...
