Speaker match for Audio Research CA-50 I like the KEF Reference II's. I purchased a Classe 300 watter (to replace my ARC Classic-60 which went into the closet). I borrowed some Ref' IIs and hooked them up to the Classe -sounded pretty good... Out of curiosity, I dusted off the CL-60 an...
Wilson CUB, anyone tried them? Heard 'em and they are great. Price sound high, however, unless they are Rosewood or other exotic. These started selling for 6K a few years ago. They may have gone up. Try to date these for manufacture.
Need Speaker Cable advice Look into Nordost "Blue Heaven". These are in your range. Also, they are completely flat and can be put under carpet, etc. I own 'em and like 'em. Good Luck!
Waveform Speakers I believe these speakers come from Canada. Their designer (John Otvos?) took it really hard (mid '90s) when his original effort got luke warm reception in the press. His new "Egg" design is generally recognized as a masterpiece. I've heard them at...
The best band? Maybe not BUT........... Bill Quateman - a Chicago player (no pun) from the '70s played some of the best urban (just a guy from the neighborhood) rock'n roll, funky sweet kind of sounds and I miss him... (can't find him on CD... wazup with THAT?) Also loved Tufano & G...
Starter SACD setup, ideal speakers ? Listen to Thiel 2.3 and KEF Reference-II.
Ohm tap Howdy, I've always read that electroctatics prefer a high impedance connection e.g. 16 ohm (and higher). I've also read that you should choose the connection which closely matches the minimum dip in your speaker's impedance curve. Speaker impedanc...
Can speaker cables damage amplifiers? Oscillation? Have you ever seen the footage of that large suspension bridge that started rocking with the wind until it self-destructed? That is oscillation.
how do I retube? Please read your owners manual. If it's a no brainer, do it yourself. Also, don't touch the tubes with your bare fingers due to the oil they leave on the glass. Good listening!
what is Slew Rate ? Slew rate, I believe, is how fast your amp can recharge it's main power capacitors. If a humongous crecendo sucks all of the reserve power out of your caps, you want to replace it pronto (sorry, I watched M*A*S*H today). Compare Krell's slew rate ...
Audio Research Pre-amps: used prices? If units are in Prime (capital "P") condition, I'd say $1500 for SP-14 and $1200 for SP-9 (both have phono preamp, yes?). I recently paid $825 for LS-9 line stage (in prime condition). It's quite a good unit (but no phono). Cheers!

Top manufacturers! Audio Research for tubes; Krell for solid state; Theta for digital; Classe for small solid state (preamps & DACs); B&W, Theil, Dunlavy for dynamic speakers; Nordost & Transparent for wire; PS Audio for power conditioning. Enjoy...
Cheap CD option for the folks Hi There, What you might want to do is get the folks a decent center channel speaker and some kind of A/V recever to power it. I know my aging (quite gracefully) parents have trouble understanding TV dialog, etc. and I'm going to get them this soo...
Sony SACD 1 or 777 ...Haven't heard SACD but have heard CD upsampled to 192 kHz and, let me tell you, it was THE most natural, believable, wholistic, just plain wonderful thing I've heard to date. System: dcs converter (Elgar?), dcs upsampler, Thiel 7.? (flagship) s... |
