Lost all hearing in one ear, is it worth upgrading speakers?
Tooth, same problem here.  I suddenly lost hearing in the right ear almost a year ago.  I still appreciate quality of the gear I have, but lost interest in upgrading. Doctor says that cochlea is damaged, most likely by the (chicken pox / shingles)...
Better sound with ethernet cable?
It shouldn’t matter. In either case, wireless or Ethernet, you’re sending just data (no real D/A timing involved). Both can produce electrical noise, radiated or coupled, that might affect the sound but it’s hard to tell which one will sound bette...
The music’s the thing but....
The fact is most people dont know what is a minimally natural or minimally musical sound, they are perpetually unsatisfied.Audiophiles often have GAS (Gear Acquire Syndrome) and/or Gardener's Syndrome (constant need to repot and trim).
The music’s the thing but....
My relative, fan of classical music, had bad mid-fi system with very limited clarity and frequency range.  He was OK with it.  Perhaps he did not realize (or didn't care) what is possible, since he could afford much better one.  It is a shame, tha...
To twist or keep separate
Twisting positive and negative lowers inductance (important) and increases capacitance (not important). It also makes cable immune to electromagnetic and capacitive noise pickup (and radiation). Twisting two already twisted cables is different and...
Amplifier speaker relay problems.
Dsrjohn,  AC voltage from one of the transformers taps produces positive voltage (D309,C309) for the status LED and the negative voltage (D308, C306, C307) to open transistor Q305.  When all for transistors Q302, Q305, Q303, Q304 are open then vol...
Should manufacturers provide circuit schematics & parts list?
It is not only the issue of protecting their design, but also of protecting their reputation.  Poorly done unqualified repairs will make percentage of the gear sound worse or fail again, making bad name for the company.
Benchmark AHB2 - To 'mono' or not to 'mono'
Electrical damping occurs because moving coil generates voltage that produces current in direction that causes motion of the membrane in opposite direction hence stopping the membrane.  This current is equal back EMF (voltage on the speaker) divid...
Benchmark AHB2 - To 'mono' or not to 'mono'
A lower damping factor will make the amp sound less tight and it may give you a slight bass bump at the speaker resonance frequency. For the damping ot the membrane movement - speaker's own impedance is in the series with the amp's output.  Most o...
Benchmark AHB2 Amplifier, opinions and competition

Benchmark AHB2 Amplifier, opinions and competition
I upgraded to AHB2 from class D Rowland 102.  I had similar impressions, but what really surprised me was bass extension.  I started hearing lowest bass notes more pronounced.  How different could be 5Hz@-3db (Rowland) vs 0.1Hz@-3dB (Benchmark) wh...
Eliminate USB from the chain?
In USB, Firewire, and Ethernet there is no issue of clock jitter since there is no clock related to D/A conversion. Information is sent as a data. The issue is to keep just right amount of it. Too much will overflow receiver’s buffer while too lit...
Eliminate USB from the chain?
Both Async USB and Ethernet don't operate in real time (timing doesn't matter).  Because of that the only thing that counts is DAC's sensitivity to external electrical noise and amount of this noise injected in each scheme.  Ethernet should be a l...
Audioquest King Cobra vs. Yukon?
King Cobra is a new name of Python (that had great reviews).  To stay competitive AQ moved production to China, reduced prices and renamed cables.  Python became King Cobra, Viper - Diamondback  etc.  I replaced King Cobra with much more expensive...
What does a Hexfred do?
rodman99999,   Fig. 1 is incorrect.  For that to work properly it needs grounded center tap of transformer.  There are Schottkys operating at higher voltages.  60V would not be enough for most audio application since each diode in bridge rectifier...
