Help a confused newbie build his first setup...
Blindjim, I suspect that progress in speaker technology is much slower than progress in electronics especially in signal processing. Starting with the speaker makes more sense to me. As for the split, I would place 45% in electronics and equal amo...

"good sound throughout the house" - planar speakers have narrow sweet spot AFAIK.
"The Beatles" Apple Lossless on iTunes?
Traudio, It makes sense, since download might be gone after hardware/software disaster but unused hard copy will stay forever.
speaker level sub hookup on class D?
Magfan, you're right - I forgot about it.

Aldres, buying lower level gear will cost you more since eventually you'll replace it - unless you have, like many of us, "gardener's syndrome" and need to trim and re-pot anyway. I would buy at least one main component of high quality that you ca...
speaker level sub hookup on class D?
Magfan, both 500ASP and 1000ASP have two voltages 50V/80V and 80V/120V respectively, where first (lower) voltage they call "preload". I'm not sure what it means but from my calculations they use higher of two voltages for output stage.

Magfan, ICE is 'full bridge' meaning that load (common mode choke, zobel network, speaker) is placed across the bridge of four Mosfets while two other arms of the bridge are GND and +VCC. At one state two Mosfets on opposite (diagonal) arms of the...

Outputs on Icepower amp behave the same way as outputs of the bridged amplifier - both terminals of each output are active. If your Velodyne has both speaker level inputs referenced to same level (internal GND) it will short Icepower amp. This con...
When is digital going to get the soul of music?
Alex, I'm sure there are many great TTs but in my small world it often resembles discussion about performance of Rolls-Royce vs. Bentley. For the money I could spend on decent TT I upgraded speakers from average to great but could also upgrade mai...

"gee, I think the factory down the road just finished for the day; hmmm, I wonder if Cathy has her computer on in her bedroom; man, another one of those steamy, humid days"Frank, as I said "on even Tuesdays"
When is digital going to get the soul of music?
Frank - you're right about the house. Unfortunately it is the most expensive part of any audio system. With much less than perfect room, varying quality of the recordings, synergy of all components and taste/preference of the listener, discussing ...

When is digital going to get the soul of music?
Learsfool, I'm pretty sure there are one mike digital recordings but agree that digital is promoting multi-microphone use. I'd like to know why they do it since one mike recording seems the most natural to me. They have to gain something by placin...
When is digital going to get the soul of music?
For me it is only issue of playback, since I cannot tell analog from digital master (other than hiss of tape). I believe it is better to allocate all resources into digital than building two systems (since LP selection is so limited).Again, LP pla...
When is digital going to get the soul of music?
Learsfool, My friend who works for very large recording studio said that they got rid of very expensive analog tape recorders more than 10 years ago and everything since is done digital. Your ears, being in orchestra, plus experience with live ins...
