Class D amps
Nordic587 - Like any other class of amplifiers there are better and worse class D amps while everything depends on system synergy. My small class D amp is good for the price but in different price range you'll find many great class D amps like men...
Top 10 Snafus to avoid when building a good rig
Minorl, Your points 5 and 6 are really important. People often get lost in complexity of the audio and end up at the mercy of dealers who have different objectives. I second your recommendation to take time and not rush with decisions.
Class D amps
I just typed "class D" into search engine and got 300 threads in response. It is a very good tool for novice. It is not mandatory but rather good manners.
Class D amps
Fidler, I'm familiar with Hypex modules. Hypex kits were very nice with low inductance slit foil electrolytic caps and big satisfaction of building it yourself.
Class D amps
Magfan, I remember IR but there are many others. The list is old. As for rudeness, it would be very rude of me to ask on this forum if TT or tubes still exist, displaying total ignorance, especially when information is on the cover of most audio m...
Class D amps
Nordick587 - it must've been long coma, since this partial list of companies making home Audio Class D was compiled in 2008:Acoustic Reality www.acoustic-realityeAR202, etc (ICEPower)Aivin www.aivinDT300 (www.aivin) (Tripath)Analog Research Techno...
HDCD FLAC FOOBAR SPDIF Cary 303/200 HDCD
Larry_s, AFAIK HDCD coding is a combination of peak extend (improved dynamics) and better filtering with interpolation. Redbook CD has limited dynamic range (otherwise everybody with a boombox or small system would complain about buzzing speakers ...
HDCD FLAC FOOBAR SPDIF Cary 303/200 HDCD
Without decoding dynamics might be lower and data will be only 15 bit since bit #16 is used to switch dynamic range.
Speaker wire gauge
You don't even have to calculate since area doubles every 3 steps. 4 wires = 4 x area = 6 steps. 24-6=18.
Acoustic Zen Adagio Speakers?
Mjmch2003, Yes speakers in Adagio have underhung motor that is responsible for both price (huge magnets) and some loss of dynamics. In exchange they produce much less distortion especially when displacements are large. Only few companies use under...
Bandwidth question?
Orpheus10, We're all talking harmonics here. I mentioned summing of harmonics twice while Al mentioned it also few times. Highest fundamental is around 8kHz (church organs) but most often it is only up to about 2kHz as it is shown in this interact...
will different lengths affect sound
I screw-up numbers in my last post - 54 deg should be 45 deg while phase difference between 10' and 20' cable comes to 12.5 degree (assuming resistive load of 4 ohms).arctan(2/4) - arctan(1/4) = 12.5deg
Bandwidth question?
Magfan, my class D Rowland 102 has 5Hz-65kHz -3dB bandwidth but I'm saving my Pesos for Rowland 625 with small possible temporary setbacks in the future like divorce, bankruptcy and foreclosure.
will different lengths affect sound
Much simpler explanation than transmission line analysis: Inductance of straight wire runs in order of 400nH/ft. Inductive reactance of 10' of speaker wire (20' counting both ways) at 20kHz is Xl=2*pi*20e3*20*400e-9=1ohm.Difference between 10' and...
Bandwidth question?
"Why 10 times the audbile bandwidth is neccessary" - Because of phase shift. Rule of thumb says that phase shift at 1/10 of -3dB cutoff frequency is about 5 deg and that might be significant for proper summing of harmonics.
