Tube Watts vs. Solid State Watts - Any credence?
I believe Atmasphere mentioned once particular B&W speakers consisting of lower efficiency 4 ohm bass speakers with higher efficiency 8 ohm midrange and tweeter. Speaker has great bass when amplifier doubles current on 4 ohm speaker, but not s...
Recent sound deterioration shrillness, ringing
I'm not sure about newer Icepower but older modules, including one in my Rowland 102, have this problem. It is because of usage of single supply while reversing direction of the speaker using 4 Mosfet (switches) bridge. That way, half of supply vo...
Tube Watts vs. Solid State Watts - Any credence?
Music requires very little average power, unless one listens to sine waves. It is possible that two of 50W amplifiers can be designed with very different headrooms. One might have small headroom being, for instance class A amp while the oder has h...
Safety of Older Electronics
Yes, filter caps go bad when gear is not used for a very long time because electrolyte "eats" out aluminium oxide, a dielectric, reducing breakdown voltage (presence of voltage slowly rebuilds it), but filter caps can also go bad because they simp...
DAC drops out when Furnace starts or stops. HELP
Length of the cable might or might not add to the problem.Longer cable allows to avoid first reflection adding/modifying shape of original transition (many factors involved). You GH cable might work better because of length or because of better ch...
Tube Watts vs. Solid State Watts - Any credence?
The difference in perceived loudness between 70W and 140W amplifier is only 22%. Tube amps, when overdriven tend to produce "soft clipping" (softer/gradual overdive transition), while SS amp just chops off the peaks producing a lot of unpleasant s...
Another Pair of Skeptics Converted
The difference between relatively inexpensive AQ King Cobra (formerly Python) and Acoustic Zen Absolute in my system wasn't very pronounced. Both had same neutral sound but AZ was more refined/cleaner, faster, more vivid, blacker background etc. H...
The missing piece
Wonderfull Hyperion HPS-938 speakers. Too bad that Hyperion had no idea how to run business resulting in bankruptcy. Poor customer support, no dealer base (closest dealer to Chicago was in Pennsylvania), no advertising of any kind. Very sad.
NOS DAC's without any digital filtering?
There is a difference between upsampling and oversampling, When ratio is even then it is oversampling, usually achieved by usage of PLL. It reduces jitter - that translates to noise in frequency domain. Stronger reduction of jitter can be achieved...
NOS DAC's without any digital filtering?
The fact that R2R DAC is used in non-oversampling mode doesn't mean that it has to be redbook (16/44.1) only. You can simply feed it with 192kHz and it will update output at 192kHz. No filtering or interpolation.
Class D Amps Cable matter??
Mlapenta - my cables, Acoustic Zen Satori, were criticized for "full" lower midrange. It is perfect with my class D amp Rowland model 102 since it sounded lean with AQ cables. Now chestiness came back to male voices, cellos sound deeper etc.
Class D Amps Cable matter??
There is a small (about 1 percent) amount of the switching noise on the speaker cables. It can couple to anything else by capacitive or electromagnetic coupling. Capacitive you can reduce by keeping cables away or crossing cables at 90 degrees. El...
Custom Bridge Rectifier on a preamp power supply
Atmasphere, not only power transformer but also inductance of electrolytic caps. There are snubbers, capacitors parallel to diodes etc. but the best is to start with a soft diode. Inductance of big electrolytic caps is in series with the output. P...
Power Amp Repair Question
It is fair to ask for return of your money. One month is plenty of time to diagnose the problem. They either lack technical ability or are just too busy. Either way, from your perspective no work was done and you have right to demand return. If th...
Custom Bridge Rectifier on a preamp power supply
Main problem of linear power supply is switching at the max voltage when diodes become polarized in opposite direction. Current drops rapidly to zero and for a moment diode conducts in opposite direction to snap back to zero. What you need is a so...
