Review: Sony CDP-X777ES CD Player
Glad you're happy, but I think these players were not very good sounding at all. I had a mid-90's one of these and it was bright & thin with an irritating, pointed upper midrange and lower treble. Imaging was a mess. I tried the player direct,...
Old Classic Receivers: A Mistake to Buy?
It's nice to hear all of you who like old classic stuff. It appears a number of you have had little problem with your older pieces. However, what about the aging, drying capacitor issue? I mean, even Nelson Pass said the electrolytics last for 15 ...
Counterpoint Hybrid Amps: How do they sound?
Some of you hit the nail on the head -- 10 year old equipment has parts that are not of the resolution and finess of present day stuff. And, of course, there is the other problem of aging capacitors that have a life expectancy of 15 years (althoug...
B&W 802 seriesIII-effect of Northcreek cross overs
I have the 802 III's with Northcreek crossovers. The sound of the speaker improved at least 35%. The congestion is gone; the sound is cleaner, more extended, more dynamic, better bass. It's true that $1600 is a lot for a pair of speakers worth $20...
Shipping prices and buyers...
As a frequent Seller, who knows there are problem Buyers at there, I vigorously disagree with those who think it is the Buyer's responsibility to pay for boxing and packing materials units that the Seller was too negligent to keep. It is the SELLE...
What DAC should I buy?
Zaikesman, my beloved Theta IIIa was sadly bettered by a Bel Canto DAC2, and I didn't want to face it, either. Everything is system dependent, of course, but the Bel Canto was cleaner, clearer, more detailed and more musical. I'll be curious what ...
Am I the only one who thinks B&W is mid-fi?
I have B&W 802 Matrix III's and they don't have "boom & sizzle" at all. The bass is very tight and defined, and the high end is not bright at all; that is, with high quality recordings. You do hear all the flaws with lesser recordings, and...
6550C vs KT88
KP, they were Svet 6550c's. Even more puzzling is that Rogue uses and recommends the EH's; so, your experience is unusual. Did you bias the amps for both tubes? I question that because you said the Svet's "ran much cooler."
6550C vs KT88
I TOTALLY DISAGREE with most of the posts. I have a VT-100 MkII. I do not like the original Svetlana 6550s. I put Electro Harmonix 6550s in it, and love the result. As opposed to Killerpiglet's experience in a Rogue amp, I found the EH6550 to have...
What qualifies a "low baller"
Seems some of you guys are more tolerant of low-ballers than me. I hate it when I have a firm price at, or a little above, the average selling price, and I get all these cheapskates who totally ignore the FIRM part, and usually the perfect conditi...
What's Best , Audio Research VT-100 or VT-100 MKII
I agree with Larryro -- never have I heard anyone say the Mk I was better than the Mk II. It is the opposite -- the Mk II is more powerful with a beefier power supply, a cooling fan, and some circuit changes. It would be more accurate to say that ...
Bel Canto DAC2 : Sounds more like music
Oops! The above should read, "sounds LESS mechanical."
Noticed alot of Sonic Frontiers being unloaded
What a sad and pitiful affair. When the beginning of the end for the SF product line occured, I spoke with Chris Jensen, and then he was gone. I don't know if Chris Johnson is even still around. Nick in Service may be the only original -------What...
My New Bel Canto DAC 2
I also have DAC 2, that is probably only half-burned in. It is more transparent than my former Theta IIIa. There is less texture or grain, although I never thought of the Theta this way. The bass has improved, and is quite good. Overall, the prese...
Your choice of EL34's
Albert, with all due respect to you, and I do think very highly of you, I think you are wrong on the 5 to 1 markup. That may be the case on PARTS costs on a piece of electronics, but not on the markup on a single item. I even think the 5 to 1 mark...
